Astounding visual masterpiece...

"There is no such thing as political murder, political bombing or political violence. There is only criminal murder, criminal bombing and criminal violence."

Nominally, Hunger is a motion picture about the life of IRA activist Bobby Sands who died in 1981 as the result of a hunger strike. But this startling feature film debut of British visual artist Steve McQueen (no relation to th... read more

A very good movie

The war between the British government and the IRA was at the end of the 70's pretty ruthless and this movie shows how far both sides would go to reach their goals. It is indeed a merciless movie which doesn't take sides but neutrally displays all the facts. For a directing début, I thought it was pretty impressive. You can see that McQueen was originally an artist as, in the midst of the horror ... read more

Consumed with artistic ugliness and teeth-grindingly nasty realism, "Hunger" is the first film by up-and-coming director Steve McQueen, nut to be confused with the "The Great Escape" man. No. This Steve McQueen is big, black, and British, and knows more about European prisons in the 80's than any man should be comfortable knowing.

The setting is 1981 Ireland, and the film follow... read more

too Painful to Watch.

“Hunger was the debut full-length movie for Steve McQueen, and it is one of those movies where you have to watch it because it's a debut for a promising director, but it just burnt into my mind, to be honest i wish that i haven't seen it, it was too painful to watch.

It tells the story of Bobby Sands, an IRA (Irish Republican Army) member, who were imprisoned in HM Prison Maze, and was leading the prison into a hunger strike demanding the Special Category Status, which is a status in which he should be treated as a political prisoner not as a criminal and should not be wearing a prison costume.

The movie starts silently for long time, with no dialog, just capturing the suffering and the violence inside the prison, how the prisoners were treated and how they exchange mess” read more

“Hunger is anger, no doubt about it, when you see the violence between both sides and, for the irate irish, against themselves. I dont want to quote the political cinicism of Thatcher, who used the same phrase, but quote the hunger of martyrdom that literally consumes Bobby Sands. The priest, in the long pause of his conversation with Bobby, is, ironically, the only one who doesnt see his christic aura.” read more

"viewed: October 11, 2012 I don't know what to think. Maybe because I don't really understand the problem presented in this movie. The whole picture was quite interesting and touching, the creation of the main actor was great, shocking picture of prison, but a political setting, the problem of "why and what" was foreign to me."

"DVD Ankea elokuva vapautensa puolesta taistelevien irlantilaisvankien pidosta brittiläisessä kuritushuoneessa. IRA ja laitosleffat kiinnostavat aina ja aika paska fiilishän Hungeristakin hyvässä mielessä jää. Kahden pianonkoskettimen pimputus toimii musana mainiosti, eikä hidastempoisuus tätä filmiä syö. Sitä vaan mietin, että mites ihmeessä ihminen muka pysyy kaksi kuukautta elossa syömättä? Entä oliko pakkoruokinta tuohon aikaan Iso-Britanniassa kiellettyä? Kuoleman kasv"

No. This Steve McQueen is big, black, and British, and knows more about European prisons in the 80's than any man should be comfortable knowing.

The setting is 1981 Ireland, and the film follows Bobby Sands, a real person, we are told. Bobby is played by Michael Fassbender, who is now acclaimed for playing in McQueen's new NC-17 drama "Shame." Fassbender is considered a handsome man by many, and seeing him brought to this sad physical state is disturbing, to say the least.

The real Bobby Sands, an IRA member and Irish Republican, was arrested for keeping handguns in his home, with a h” read more
