Astounding visual masterpiece...

"There is no such thing as political murder, political bombing or political violence. There is only criminal murder, criminal bombing and criminal violence."

Nominally, Hunger is a motion picture about the life of IRA activist Bobby Sands who died in 1981 as the result of a hunger strike. But this startling feature film debut of British visual artist Steve McQueen (no relation to th... read more

A very good movie

The war between the British government and the IRA was at the end of the 70's pretty ruthless and this movie shows how far both sides would go to reach their goals. It is indeed a merciless movie which doesn't take sides but neutrally displays all the facts. For a directing début, I thought it was pretty impressive. You can see that McQueen was originally an artist as, in the midst of the horror ... read more

Consumed with artistic ugliness and teeth-grindingly nasty realism, "Hunger" is the first film by up-and-coming director Steve McQueen, nut to be confused with the "The Great Escape" man. No. This Steve McQueen is big, black, and British, and knows more about European prisons in the 80's than any man should be comfortable knowing.

The setting is 1981 Ireland, and the film follow... read more

“Hunger is anger, no doubt about it, when you see the violence between both sides and, for the irate irish, against themselves. I dont want to quote the political cinicism of Thatcher, who used the same phrase, but quote the hunger of martyrdom that literally consumes Bobby Sands. The priest, in the long pause of his conversation with Bobby, is, ironically, the only one who doesnt see his christic aura.” read more

"1st viewing, DVD 18 March 2013 Director: Steve McQueen I really enjoy Steve McQueen's(yes, not the famous actor) way of directing a film. Instead of relying on words he relies in imagery, and what a beautiful imagery it is! It's slow and extremely aesthetical. I enjoyed Hunger more than his latest one, Shame, though I enjoyed that one as well. Maybe it was mostly due to the theme. Made me convinced that Michael Fassbender is one of the best new talents around. "

"Watched on: 1/25/13 There's no denying this is a powerful and harrowing film but it's also not that entertaining. This is one of the few films I admire but at the same time I didn't really enjoy it either."

"01/17/13 - The biggest problem with this film is a lack of focus. In some movies that isn't a big deal but this seems like we were supposed to feel something for this character and his plight, but the character isn't introduced until half way through. I seemed like the movie was trying to be really visceral and intense but wasn't at all. It wouldn't be as bad if they weren't specifically following 2 other characters the first half of the movie that didn't go anywhere. It felt like the writer"
