Mel, it's terrific to see you back!

"What the hell...I'm gonna enjoy what's left of the summer."

Now this is how you make a proper action-thriller! Get the Gringo (a.k.a. How I Spent My Summer Vacation) is one hell of a film; a stripped-down, gritty actioner reminiscent of the kind of dark, no-nonsense thrillers we saw back in the '70s and '80s. Mel Gibson is at his best when someone is kicking the shit out of him. Payback, Lethal Weapon and conspiracy theory are damn fine examples of Mel's ability to take a kicking and still come out looking cool. So I was more than glad to see him back at his best in 'Get the Gringo'.

After taking a long break of 8 years as a lead actor, Mel Gibson was finally back in 2010 with 'Edge of Darkness' but since then, he has been struggling to recovery his A list status. Of course, you could argue that the current box-office is ruled by the super-heros, YA book adaptations and the animated features and no movie star can't secure a box-office success on his own but, to be honest, n... read more

Top 10 Manliest Movies of 2012 (10 movies items)

" This movie reminds us why we loved Mel Gibson so much in the first place. An old-school action thriller, it feels like a sequel to Payback. The movie is rated R for good reason; its vicious violence and Mel's central performance makes this an ideal slice of masculine entertainment."

“After taking a long break of 8 years as a lead actor, Mel Gibson was finally back in 2010 with 'Edge of Darkness' but since then, he has been struggling to recovery his A list status. Of course, you could argue that the current box-office is ruled by the super-heros, YA book adaptations and the animated features and no movie star can't secure a box-office success on his own but, to be honest, none of his latest projects have been really amazing enough to deserve a better reception and this movie was a perfect example. I mean, it was not bad at all, I really enjoyed how gritty the whole thing was and it is always a pleasure to see Mel Gibson playing such a shaddy figure. So, the tone was pretty dark but, unfortunately, as soon as Gibson got acquainted with the little Mexican fellow, t” read more

"A good cheap B rated Action movie. Sure it has it's problems and the story isn't all that great. The first half is a little weird and slow but the middle ending picks it up. "

Being typecast is not always a bad thing, for some actors it can be a blessing; I want to see Bruce Willis killing a ton of guys before delivering a witty repartee, I want to see Steven Seagal avenging the death of his murdered wife, I even want to see Hugh Grant in a last minute dash to bag the girl, and I want to see Mel Gibson chasing down a big bag of cash stolen from him, shooting every bad guy who gets in his way. If you agree with me, then 'Get the Gringo' is definitely for you.

" Mel Gibson is BACK, with a vengeance. Just when you thought he'd grown out of these roles, here he is kickin' ass and taking names in a tough Mexican prison. Its not perfect, but it doesn't need to be when its this fun to watch. Well done to all involved!"

With so many glossy, CGI-laden blockbusters hitting screens these days, it's invigorating to see Mel Gibson - who grows more badass with each passing year - doing what he does best in his first true action-thriller since 1998's Payback. Gibson may be controversial, but those who are open-minded enough to watch Get the Gringo will be rewarded with a visceral, lively motion picture featuring Gibson back at the top of his game.
