Reviews of Hot Fuzz

Funniest British comedy since A Fish Called Wanda.

Posted : 1 year ago on 29 November 2008 10:20 (A review of Hot Fuzz)

"I used to believe in the immutable word of the Law. That is until the night Mrs. Butterman was taken from me. You see no-one loved Sandford more than her - she was head of the Women's Institute, chair of the floral committee. When they started the Village of the Year contest, she worked around the clock. I've never seen such dedication. On the eve of the adjudicator's arrival, some travellers moved into Callaghan Park. Before you could say 'gypsy scum' we were knee-deep in dog muck, thieving kids and crusty jugglers. We lost the title. And Irene lost her mind. She drove her Datsun Cherry into Sandford Gorge. From that moment on, I swore that I would do her proud."

Directed by: Edgar Wright

Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Paddy Considine

Genre: Action/Comedy/Crime/Mystery

Running time: 110 minutes

My review:

Top London cop, PC Nicholas Angel is good. Too good. And to stop the rest of his team looking bad, he is reassigned to the quiet town of Sandford. He is paired with Danny Butterman, who countlessly questions him on the action lifestyle. Everything seems quiet for Angel, until two actors are found decapitated. It is address to as an accident, but Angel isn't going to accept that, especially when more and more people turn up dead. Angel and Danny clash with everyone, whilst trying to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the apparent "accidents".

Hot Fuzz is without a doubt one of the funniest films that I have ever seen. Hot Fuzz is also one of the greatest British films of all time. As far as I am concerned, Hot Fuzz is a masterpiece of British comedies. Hot Fuzz is about a young cop called Nicholas Angel. He loves his job so much he just cannot switch off. He acts like its obsessive and cant stop working. Because of this, his girlfriend splits up with him. Nicholas arrests so many people per day that the Chief Inspector of London, the Inspector and Sergeant send Nicholas packing to a village called Sandford which is in Gloucestershire.

When Nicholas arrives, he meets new people with different personalities and also the entire NWA which are the bosses of almost every single shop/building in Sandford. Nicholas also meets a fat, ugly and unfit cop called Danny Butterman who is the son of Nicholas new inspector Frank Butterman. However, there are murders in the village and Nicholas gets extremely suspicious about the murders. But none of the villagers believe Nicholas because all the murders are believed to have been accidents because there has not been any recorded murder Sandford for 20 years.

Together, Nicholas and Danny work together and try and investigate all the murders and who the convicts are. It is really funny because Nicholas is healthy, fit and confident with his job but Danny is an overweight, annoying, irritating and very unconfident cop who only helps Nicholas when something extremely serious comes along which is quite funny really. Despite that, Nicholas and Danny form a friendship that becomes quite personal because Nicholas tells Danny about his uncle who was a sergeant in the Met and was a drug dealer and Nicholas also tells him how obsessed he is with the job and his splitting with his girlfriend. It is really nice of Danny to actually try and help him by watching action movies. It is like Danny is literally obsessed with films because he has like a whole room full of DVDs.

Also, some of the actions in this film are from some of the actions from the movie. For example, the gun scene from Point Break which starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Not only Nicholas and Danny made me laugh in this film but the two Andies made me laugh because they both hate Nicholas and they both say hilarious sarcastic comments to him that are quite offensive and are quite funny at the same time. I love the scene where Nicholas gets a phone call from a random man who lost a swan. This man says his name is Mr. Peter Ian Staker. And Nicholas says P.I.Staker? Right, pisstaker. Come on!! This is the funniest British film ever made but not the best British film though. The best British films in my opinion are A Clockwork Orange, Lawrence Of Arabia and The Bridge On The River Kwai.

This film is very bloody but nowhere near as bloody as Shaun Of The Dead was. I cant wait to see Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright do another project together but it has to star Nick Frost as well as Simon because they make an absolutely awesome partnership together and they are both extremely funny in both Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead. If you like gore and blood, then you will love this and also if you loved Shaun Of The Dead which I did then you will love this too. This film will leave you in shock because there is a twist that changes every single thing around this film. There are some spoofs aswell but are really funny ones though. Masterpiece! Comedy of 2007!!

"Bring the noise!!!"

"Bring the noise!!!"

After the great success of the 2004 British comedy Shaun of the Dead it was inevitable that the filmmakers would team up for another spoof. Unlike the brainless spoof films created by the Americans who never have any conception of plot, Hot Fuzz is unique and brilliant. Instead of brainlessly spoofing films while focusing on the laughs, Hot Fuzz is a parody of the action genre as well as an addition to the action genre. There are plenty of clever laughs that improve with every screening, not to mention a lot of high-energy action and a genius amalgamation of every action film cliché under the sun. It would take a very talented bunch of filmmakers to actually make this idea work; needless to say I was very impressed with the efforts of everyone who took part in the filmmaking.

Simon Pegg is a big city cop named Nicolas Angel who has a mighty impressive record during his career: an arrest rate 400% higher than any other police officer, and very skilled in every aspect of being part of the force. Nicolas' jealous colleagues conspire to get rid of him because he is making them all "look bad". And hence Nicolas is reassigned to the sleepy, pleasant little village of Sandford.

He is teamed up with an overeager police officer named Danny Butterman (Frost) whose father runs the local police force. Danny is an eager action movie fan who is desperate to see real action; that is, intense gun fights and high octane car chases. Danny's enormous ego really gets on Nicolas' nerves. But the sleepy town is soon rocked by a number of gruesome deaths that are dismissed as accidents. Nicolas, however, becomes convinced that these people were in fact murdered. As the intrigue deepens, Danny's dreams of explosions, high-octane car-chases, gun fights and all-out action becomes more and more like a reality.

In tradition with Shaun of the Dead, the filmmakers spend plenty of time fleshing out a discernable plot while filling the screen with laughs. Unlike the brainless laughs supplied by American films, it seems the British gags are a lot more cerebral. And it's this fact that moves the film out of the "brainless entertainment" category; instead becoming a damn fine piece of cinema that is also quite groundbreaking and creative.

For a comedy, the filmmakers made no attempt to hold back on high levels of strong gruesome violence during the action scenes. The action scenes were filmed using shaky cam style and quick cuts for the modern action movie-goer. This may be looked upon as a negative aspect, but the point of using this style was to spoof the modern action genre. And it's a lot more kickass than the usual Bad Boys II kind of action scenes.

Hot Fuzz is nothing short of a brilliant movie. It's superb entertainment filled with laughs and jammed with references to classic action films. Although a bit of a slow build up, the final action scene is a no-holds-barred piece that last at least 20 minutes. Even though it's a long action scene, the filmmakers sustain the intensity and excitement from start to finish.

Hot Fuzz is immensely superior to the usual American spoof movies we've seen far too much of these days. The film is creative, enthralling and extremely entertaining. The creators of Shaun of the Dead have recaptured the magic and spoofed another genre. I hope the team spoof another genre sometime into the future.

Movies like this make England great

Hot Fuzz i thought was a good comedy Nick Frost i thought was the funniest with a lot of good jokes which actually made me laugh. Simon Pegg also did a great job better then other movies.
My favorite scene is in Somerfield Supermarket because it was just a fun scene to watch and entertaining.
The movie also featured David Threlfall who plays Frank in Channel 4's drama Shameless who plays a small part as Martin Blower. A lot of people you may recognize in the movie. Worth watching. The 2 disc DVD is a must buy.

Hot Fuzz review

Posted : 2 years ago on 8 November 2007 02:52 (A review of Hot Fuzz)

One of the best films of the year in my opinion. It combines comedy with action and does it brilliantly. This is not one to be missed.

Sergeant Nicholas Angel gets transferred to a quite town of Sandford, where at first everything seems crime-related as the first night there he arrests a bunch of people. One of these them was Danny Butterman, his new partner and boss' son. It is only soon after Angel arrives that a series of murders occur and he is the only one in that village that is determined to find out who is responsible, as everyone else seems to think they are "accidents". So Angel and Danny team up and do all they can to find out who is responsible, delivering fantastic action scenes and hilarious lines.

Simon Pegg was brilliant in every possible way. His character was perfect for him and he just made it 100% better than anyone else could have done. Everything was just perfectly placed with an amazing script. The direction was superb, strange style but I really liked it. I'll definitely be checking out more of Edgar Wright's films. Please, if you haven't already - see this movie!

excellent comedy

His superiors being jealous of his perfect record, Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is transferred from London to the seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. There he meets his new partner, Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), the witless son of the police chief. A series of shocking accidents upsets the village, and Angel is certain that the village is not what it seems.

Brilliant acting, well-directed.
Yes, some scenes at the end are gruesome, but they are well done and quite funny.

Filled with car chases, gun fights, explosive bodies, this is a hilarious comedy.

(Thanks to Prelude76 for recommending this movie to me, I wouldn't have watched it otherwise, and would have missed on a great British film.)

Not so much a spoof film as an original masterpiece. This followup to Shaun of the Dead is no sophomore bust as Simon Pegg and Nick Frost deliver again.

Great movie, for the most part.

Definitely pointed satire and mockery of typical action films. Bogged down a bit by the lengthy intro/exposition scenes but MORE than delivered in the second hour with an in-your-face blowout that was intense and crazy and awesome. Definitely worth seeing if you like British comedy, but Shaun of the Dead was better.

Taking the piss out of the Action Film

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 26 April 2007 10:17 (A review of Hot Fuzz)

I would have to say the best part of this film is in fact the filming technique and how it just outright mocks the high action cut shots, pans and the "high intensity" close-ups.

There are plenty of general laughs however. One of those movies that if you don't laugh once you probably aren't the type to be invited to many parties, people consider you to be a bit of a downer. But you are guaranteed to have some fun however and there are so many parts where you just can't help but chuckle.
