Boring and Vulgar

I really didn't like this film that much. Swearing and fighting appeals to the lowest common denominator of humanity. Maybe it was funny that Eligh Wood got beaten up a bit, but I still didn't like it. This type of stuff makes Great Britain look like a place of dirty crap, and I say this in the nicest way possible. Football hooligans and stuff like that I don't like. I thought the British just watched Match of the Day and drank Guinness, well, my mistake. I would avoid this totally. But, if you want to hear such appalling use of the English language, then by all means, watch this crap. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
An exceedingly powerful drama

"You don't run, not when you're with us... You stand your ground and fight!" On the surface, Green Street Hooligans looks to be a film about football hooliganism and football in general, as it's set in England and concerns avid fans of the sport. However, it's far deeper and more compelling than the premise suggests. Co-written and directed by female German filmmaker Lexi Alexander, Green Street Hooligans is reportedly part autobiographical, which lends a sense of authenticity and grit to the production. Unexpectedly powerful, the movie is predominantly a study of divided loyalties, relationships, friendships and the cost of violence, emerging as far more than just a straightforward story about football. ![]()

An average movie

I wasn't really interested by this flick but, if I remember correctly, a colleague of mine had the DVD, so I thought I should give it a try. Honestly, it is really beyond me why this movie gets such good ratings here on Listal and on Imdb. I mean, it is not really awfull but it is really damned average, that's for sure. Personally, the biggest mistake they made was to put an American as the main character. Maybe it does work for the American audience and helps them identify with him but it didn't work for me, that's for sure. It felt really superficial, a phony way to add an American element in a story where it absolutely didn't belong. Honestly, I don't think Elijah Wood should be blamed, he is a decent actor and gave his best shot but it was obviously a bad idea. Furthermore, they try to make it a gritty thriller but the whole thing was still way too glossy to be taken seriously. Still, it's too bad since they don't make many fictions about this subject and the whole thing really had some potential. To conclude, like I said before, even though it had some potential, I really didn't like it and I don't think it is really worth a look. 0 comments, Reply to this entry

0 comments, Reply to this entry

Where I come from, this film is known as Green Street, and there are four main reasons to watch it: 1. Elijah Wood gets punched in the face a lot. 2. Charlie Hunnam is a powerhouse. 3. Completely over the top cockney accents: "ee's a JEEERNO!" 4. 'ALLO BOYS! In all seriousness, this is a good film. I did start to feel some sort of attachment to the characters half way through it, despite the fact that they were all scum. Although there is some glorification of football violence, this film ultimately points out that the way of life of a football hooligan is utterly pointless and wasteful. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
