Classic comedy!

"I wouldn't cover the burning of Rome for you if they were just lighting it up!"

His Girl Friday is a hysterically funny screwball comedy masterpiece by one of cinema's greatest directors, Howard Hawks. This film is purely one of the funniest classic comedies I've ever seen. Although roughly 70 years old the film is still a wickedly enchanting oddball comedy, and its original impact... read more

I Should Like This Movie

I know I'm supposed to like this movie. It's got a great director, fabulous actors and witty dialog. And yet I hate the plot. Cary Grant spends the whole movie lying and plotting and just being pretty despicable. I guess I like him more when he charms a woman into falling for him (which he does pretty easily) rather than being a loathsome cad. I much prefer Philadelphia Story or Holiday to th... read more

A classic

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since it is such a classic, I thought I should check it out. To be honest, I always had a hard time to care for these old comedies, even the supposedly great ones, and this one was not an exception, I’m afraid. The point is that the plot was so fluffy, so unsubstantial, I really had a hard time to care about the whole thing. Somehow, this movie ... read more

Walter Burns, editor of a major Chicago newspaper, is about to lose his ace reporter and former wife, Hildy Johnson, to insurance salesman Bruce Baldwin, but not without a fight! The crafty editor uses every trick in his fedora to get Hildy to write one last big story, about murderer Earl Williams and the inept Sheriff Hartwell. The comedy snowballs as William's friend, Molly Malloy, the crooked Mayor, and Bruce's mother all get tied up in Walter's web.

The Greatest 100 Movies of All Time (100 movies items)

"This hilarious battle-of-the-sexes romp is vintage Howard Hawks, full of bawdy double entendres quipped by Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant."

50 Great Movies That Were Not Nominated For Any Os (50 movies items)

"Remember when we said that “Bringing Up Baby” was the greatest screwball comedy ever? “His Girl Friday,” a gender-swapped adaptation of stage classic “The Front Page” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, also from director Howard Hawks, is right up there too. But like ‘Baby,’ the film was completely ignored by Oscar voters: something that became a running theme for the director, who despite being one of classic Hollywood’s finest, was only ever nominated once, for “Serge"
