Before I attempt to discuss this film's merit, I'd like to start by clearing up a few things that may be misleading or unknown to potential viewers. First off, despite the 2003 you see atop the synopsis, the actual production date of this film is 1988. This is useful when assessing the production value (the look) of this film. Secondly, this film recounts all too true events. Heinous acts committe... read more

The 101 Most Controversial Films of All-Time (101 movies items)

" This documentary-style atrocity was inspired by grotesque medical experiments carried out by Japan's notorious Unit 731 during WWII."

Controversial movies I haven't seen (by Redmist) (15 movies items)

" What is it about? Japanese troops round up Chinese and Russian prisoners of war and take them to a place called Squadron 731, where they are grotesquely tortured and experimented on to test new biological weapons. Do I actually want to see this? Japanese version of 'Salo'.... NO Next one please... "

" What is it about? Japanese troops round up Chinese and Russian prisoners of war and take them to a place called Squadron 731, where they are grotesquely tortured and experimented on to test new biological weapons. Why is it so controversial? There are some very excrutiating torture scenes (a male test subject put into some kind of pressurized air chamber, in which his entire gastrointestinal track is forced out; and a poor old woman's hands made completely frostbitten in the camp's win"

"Wavers between mere exploitation and otherwise purposefully and historically significant cinema. But this is some truly cruel shit, ranking toward the very top of the disturbo-meter."

Secondly, this film recounts all too true events. Heinous acts committed on real people at a real time in history in a real place. Many more of the things that actually occurred were omitted or toned down for the film because they were even more cruel, gruesome, and demented than the tragic things dramatized in this movie. In light of these tragedies against humanity, most studious viewers of this movie will recognize that this film is a serious effort to depict the ” read more

Not so great, messed up cinema (10 movies items)

"I'm not sure why, but I wanted to like this film. And parts of me still want to defend it. But I just can't give it my recommendation with a clear conscience. And yes, there are some truly horrifying things going on here. "

Top 10 Sick Movies (+ notes) (10 movies items)

"Quote: T.F. Mous’ Men Behind The Sun stands out on the list as the only film to be based on a true story. This truly sickening film recounts the atrocities committed during World War 2 by the Japanese in the name of science, research, and the advancement of warfare. To be honest, this film could be 100% fictional and it still would have made the top 10 list, as some of the scenes are downright brutal and extremely controversial: a (supposedly real) live cat is thrown into a room of starving r"
