"Give a guy a gun, he's Superman. Give him two and he's God."
John Woo's Hard Boiled is a scrumptious feast for action lovers - an explosively visceral, operatic tour de force of amazingly choreographed violence and blistering pyrotechnics that's iced with Woo trademarks. At its core the film is a fairly standard cop drama with a limp emotional hook and cardboard characters, but wit... read more
When I finished watching this film I needed a car-jack to wrench my jaw off of the floor and return it to its rightful place, it was absolutely amazing.
It's not the greatest film ever made, not by a long shot, and my use of the word 'amazing' might need elaborating on. Basically, this film is unbelievable. To be honest, I didn't see the ending scene coming, despite the big build u... read more
"This is like watching Swan Lake. But better. But more manly. And with guns and blood spewing out all over the place. Woo is probably the greatest action director of all time, and in this he really showcases his skills. He creates an action ballet like no other, from a cop sliding down stairs killing a couple guys without missing to the same cop killing about fifty guys in a garage single-handedly with an eight (or so) round shotgun. Many people call this film "dumb", but I say "brilliant".

Chinese. Directed by John Woo.
The most amazing gun fights I've ever seen. And yeah, the poster isn't lying to you. There's a gunfight where the hero hold a baby while shooting."
"Lat sau san taam a/k/a Hard Boiled
directed by John Woo
Perhaps I'm the only one calling Hard Boiled a style-over-substance film but, frankly put, I think Hard Boiled could've delved much deeper into that whole undercover stuff and explored a little bit.
Or maybe I just don't understand film language. I wouldn't be surprised by that either.
Anyway, style-over-substance is a hard thing to pull off because if you don't like the director's stylistic choices then what is there to back the movie"

"Arguably one of the best action films ever made. John Woo's beautifully planned choreography on the action sequences is just gorgeous to watch, latter half of the film being an almost endless gunfight with some crazy baby humor included. Woo's legendary, almost three minutes long take with single handheld camera is also something to mention of and one of the highest bodycounts in movie history cannot be bad thing either. Woo's other masterpiece The Killer comes close but personally I still think"
