This is a great musical starring, among others, Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier. If you are a fan of musicals, don't miss out on this one, which won nine Academy awards (impressive).

The songs are fun, the acting is good...and the story is well written---while not quite believable, the story is more like a fairy tale.

Leslie Caron, as Gigi, goes from young school g... read more

Vincente Minnelli directed better musicals. Leslie Caron made her debut in a better musical. MGM had an entire department dedicated to churning out all-singing, all-dancing film entertainments. Gigi doesn't even register in the same radar screen as Singin' in the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis or An American in Paris. While American might have pulled off a Best Picture win like Gigi, you cannot compar... read more

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of musicals and it must be one of the few movie genres I enjoy the least but, still, I try to keep an open mind and I watch from time to time one of the classics in this genre. This time, I picked up a winner of the Best Picture Academy award directed by Vincent Minnelli, one of the masters in this genre so I thought it should be really good. Description: Amazon.com essential video Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1958 direct-to-screen follow-up to their My Fair Lady was--miraculously--every bit as memorable as that stage smash. Set in fin-de-siècle Paris and based on a Colette story, Gigi also is about a girl (Leslie Caron) on a lower rung of society who blossoms into Cinderell ... (more)

This time, I picked up a winner of the Best Picture Academy award directed by Vincent Minnelli, one of the masters in this genre so I thought it should be really good. Eventually, I thought it was indeed not bad but not much more I’m afraid. Many people argued that it was just a well made copy of ‘My Fair Lady’ but I didn’t bother me (I might have seen ‘My Fair Lady’ after this one though so it could explain why I didn’t spot the resemblance). Anyway, what really bothered me was the story itself. Indeed, you have this guy who was about 40 years old and who falls in lo” read more

25 Greatest Classic Musicals (25 movies items)

"Gigi is a unique film achievement, a youthful yet enigmatic movie with mediocre performances and spectacular songs. The film shows some startling potential but never blossoms into anything spectacular. Maurice Chevalier is merely annoying (although celebrated by most critics) and Louis Jourdan's acting and singing fall flat. Still, Gigi is an MGM classic. "

"The least creepy thing about this movie is a 33 year old man marrying a 16 yer old in what is supposed to be a happy ending. Societal judging aside Gigi is mostly boring with uninteresting characters and far too few useful things to say. It looks beautiful though."

Gigi doesn't even register in the same radar screen as Singin' in the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis or An American in Paris. While American might have pulled off a Best Picture win like Gigi, you cannot compare the two. Gigi is such an overstuffed French pastry that one wonders why this is the one to sweep up all the glory. Why wasn't something so joyous, artistic and experimental as Singin' in the Rain the one to sweep up Best Director and Best Picture, amongst numerous other Oscars? What is it about Gigi? Slow year?

It takes the basic outline of My Fair Lady, a vastly superior and more ente” read more
