Reviews of Ghost Rider
Great effects but awful acting and directing!

(A review of Ghost Rider)I was unsure of what to expect from Ghost Rider because I never read the comic books of it. There were a few things that I were expecting though and they were awesome action and visual effects along with a well acted, well directed and well written film. After seeing this film at the cinema, I came out quite disappointed because its technical qualities were awesome but the acting, directing and screenwriting was pretty lame. I think that is what you get from most films like this. The action was awesome and so were the visual effects. You can probably tell from the title that this film is quite scary and that it was.
Nicolas Cage was the thing that ruined it for me because he was completely miscast for Johnny Blaze. He was far too old to play such a young character. His black hair looked absolutely ridiculous. It didn't suit him at all. Of what happened to Blaze as a child, I couldn't see any drama or emotion at all within Nicolas Cage. Eva Mendes didn't make it any better either. I think that is what we get most of the time with supporting females in superhero films. Others include, Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns, Jennifer Garner in Daredevil and Jennifer Connelly in Hulk. Wes Bentley was pretty scary in this film as the son of the Devil.
The directing of Ghost Rider was good as far as action and visual effects are concerned but wasn't that good as far as actors are concerned. The action scenes are really intense and fun but that didn't completely satisfy me when I walked out of cinema. The script was very flat in my opinion. Ghost Rider focused more on technical qualities rather than acting, directing and writing.
Ghost Rider is an average that is more of a bad film than a good film. It is Nicolas Cage's worst performance that I think made him a bad actor nowadays. Ghost Rider could have been a lot better. There is going to be a sequel. I will see it but I don't be excited about it.

An OK film but not painful
Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 10 September 2008 07:30
(A review of Ghost Rider)This review was originally started as a comment on Elfflame's recent review but I decided to post it as a review in it's own right as I got carried away! ;-)
Elfflame gave the film a 1/10 & while I can understand the low rating in my book a 1 ranks as a painful viewing experience, something reserved for the worst films ever. Whilst Ghost Rider will never win any film-making accolades I reckon that 1/10 is very harsh, for me a 5/10, ranking it as just an OK film. It's good storyline, which to be honest you'd expect for a film adaptation of a comic book story & I think you have to give some credit for Cage's under-stated almost hang-dog depiction of the main character. A reluctant super-hero, he pulls this off very well, yes it's very cheesey & not a little corny but that's something we've come to expect from Hollywood adaptations of comic book superhero stories. It would be interesting to see how the top Korean or Russian directors would approach a Marvel film, hmmmm!
The one thing that let's the film down is the over-abundance of special effects, they detract from the film, not because they are bad, they are in fact technically brilliant but in many scenes there is simply too much going on & it's difficult to take it all in.
All in all there's much worse ways to waste a couple of hours on a weekend if you've got nothing better to do and if you are some sort of comic book fanboy then you simply have to see this film, just so you can say you have, and maybe that is the point of it. :-)

Redefining Bad
Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 10 September 2008 06:39
(A review of Ghost Rider)We all have those camp films that we like to watch. Movies that somehow redeem themselves simply because we enjoy them, but usually there is a favorite actor, or theme, or character, or something, that redeems them in some way.
This film doesn't. Granted, I'm not a fan of the comics (though if I was, I think I'd be even more pissed off by this movie), and while I like Nick Cage, he's not one of my all-time favorites either. Still, I know that there's a good story in the comics, and I know Cage can act. So how did they end up with this crap?
The film doesn't even feel like an homage. It feels like a bad computer game. You know, the sort that end up in the bargain bin a week after they come out, because no one likes it? The effects are poor, the script terrible, and the acting is horrendous--and that even from Cage, who I have seen do a million times better than this.
Overall? This is simply not worthy. Don't waste your time.

(A review of Ghost Rider)Unbelievable. This tops the worst movie I have seen lately category in a landslide and I don't expect it to fall from the there anytime soon. What a way to ruin a truly remarkable comic series.

Ghost Rider - don't bother watching
Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 5 August 2007 08:59
(A review of Ghost Rider)I had been told not to bother watching this movie, but since I had it on hand, I decided to give it a try....and found myself wishing I hadn't. It is not a good film, not well acted, not well written, and the special effects, for the most part, suck.

the worst comic film ever
Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 9 July 2007 06:43
(A review of Ghost Rider)Upon discovering his father has terminal cancer, motorcyclist Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) signs a pact with Mephistopheles (Peter Fonda), giving his soul for his father's health. The devil deceives him and his father dies in a motorcycle accident. Johnny leaves everything, even Roxanne, his girlfriend (played in later years by Eva Mendes).
Years later, now a famous motorcyclist, Johnny gets a proposal from Mephistopheles: he will release the contract if Johnny becomes the 'Ghost Rider' and defeat his son, Blackheart (Wes Bentley), who wants 1,000 evil souls and hell on earth.
I've never heard of the Ghost Rider comic, so when I started the movie, I didn't realize what I was getting into. Now as a comic book character, Ghost Rider is all right although he is not that interesting.
The plot is one that many movies have already shown. Nothing original there.
The actors!! Oh my. This honestly looked like a made-for-tv movie. Nicolas Cage was just too lousy. The way he was delivering his lines! It looked like he was suffering half the time.
The special effects are not that stunning. They're okay by my book. Nothing out of the ordinary.
My family and I watched this together last night, and we all particularly agreed that this was a stupid, badly done movie. I name it the worst comic film ever. (And I've seen most of the recent productions.)
If you must watch it, do so at your own risk.

Good Comic Based Movie
Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 19 June 2007 05:44
(A review of Ghost Rider)First off, you really can't go too wrong with a movie based on a superhero, and this one is no exception. Not only did I enjoy the movie, but the story behind ghost rider was something I never really knew. I will have to read up on it an find out how close the movie was, hopefully it was dead on. The visual effects were pretty cool, and Nicolas Cage play a really get character. All in all, the movie was really nice. If you like superhero/comic based movies, see it for yourself.
