Although an old movie, it’s just as witty as a modern classic. Focusing on Mrs Muir, a widow with a young daughter living in Victorian England. Starting a new life in a small English seaside town, both mother and daughter move into Gull Cottage. But an old sea dog named Captain Daniel Gregg who refuses to leave this mortal coil continues to haunt their new home and hopes to drive them out. After... read more

Romantic delirium becomes one woman’s preferred living space in The Ghost & Mrs. Muir. On a surface level the film seems to be obviously about a ghost haunting the seaside manor that a widow moves in to, and as they clash and learn to live with each other, they fall into some variation of love. Deeper still, and this is a tribute to Gene Tierney’s lovely performance, the movie takes on a sadde... read more

" Well, this was an average, slow-paced movie, for me. Yes, different and unique romantic story, but not fascinating at all. And I've noticed something about Gene Tierney that bothers me - she just can't portray deeper feelings. I liked her in "Laura", but in other movies I've seen she just looks same to me - emotionless, blank, even unnatural at times. I can only hope that's not the case with the rest of her films - but there's time, I'll check it..."

" "-And the way he was smirking at you, like a cat in the fishmonger's! You should have slapped his face! -Why? I found him... rather charming! -"Rather charming!" Now you're starting to talk like him! -How in blazes do you want me to talk? -That's better!" "-It's no crime to be alive! -No, my dear, sometimes it's a great inconvenience. The living can be hurt.""

"The scene in which ghostly sea captain and lover Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison), Gull Cottage's former owner who had been haunting her bedroom and thoughts in his non-flesh-and-blood form, bid good-bye to Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) while she slept, telling her that she must find her own way in life - and that she was only dreaming of a sea-captain haunting the house: ("You've made your choice, the only choice you could make. You've chosen life and that's as it should be. And that's why I'm going away"

"A charming fantasy romance set at a seaside cottage in Cornwall about a young widower meeting the ghost of a gruff sea captain. Fabulous performances from Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. The chemistry between the two is great. The storyline relies heavily on the continued relationship between them - it makes the movie rather amusing and entertaining. A timeless classic."

On a surface level the film seems to be obviously about a ghost haunting the seaside manor that a widow moves in to, and as they clash and learn to live with each other, they fall into some variation of love. Deeper still, and this is a tribute to Gene Tierney’s lovely performance, the movie takes on a sadder and somber tone – is the ghost real, or just a figment of Mrs. Muir’s imagination who she has dressed up in the personage of the former owner? The film never provides a clean-cut answer, but the duality of readings is a nice touch to what could be very sudsy material.

What’s most interesting, apart from the perfect score by Bernard Hermann and the by turns moody and romantic cin” read more
