This is the last movie directed by Paul Verhoeven which I hadn't seen yet so, of course, I was really eager to watch it. For Verhoeven, it was also a milestone since it is the first movie he made outside the Netherlands and just before he went to Hollywood directing movies such as 'Robocop', 'Total Recall', 'Basic Instinct', 'Showgirls', 'Starship Troopers' and 'Hollow man'.

Not a bad Verhoeven film, but it's not really all that special or memorable. It has fun, over-the-top moments but in terms of story it's a very typical medieval themed film. I don't believe that I'll get too much out of Flesh & Blood after this viewing and I doubt I'll see it again. But you'll definitely get some enjoyment out of this."
"
The film's title is an antiquity allusion to the phrase "sex and violence," and it fully lives up to that with an abundance of gore and perversion. This is probably my favourite period picture because it's an honest, low down, gritty view of the plague-ridden middle ages."

Cast : Rutger Hauer, Jennifer Jason Leigh
What was it about?
A band of medieval mercenaries take revenge on a noble lord who decides not to pay them by kidnapping the betrothed of the noble's son. As the plague and warfare cut a swathe of destruction throughout the land, the mercenaries hole up in a castle and await their fate.
My two cents:
It was another milestone in Verhoven's career since it was his first English-language film, the first movie he made outside the Netherlands"

Movie that's so underrated that it's making me mad. Very realistic portait (okay the last third is laughable but very entertaining stuff anyhow) of Medieval times. I've seen this about five times and I just love the way everybody in this movie are just as bad as the others. "

Basically, it is an international production and you have the usual Verhoeven trademarks : Sex, Violence and Rutger Hauer. This time, the setting was the Medieval age and I think it was a great idea to mix this time period with this director style. Ok, I have to admit, the story was pretty thin and the whole thing was actually nothing great whatsoever but it was very entertaining and I really enjoyed it. To conclude, I” read more

"Paul Verhoeven takes a crack at the violent n' bloody medieval sub genre where Rutger Hauer chops people up into little pieces and Jennifer Jason Leigh gets naked a lot. It's as excellent as it sounds.
