Flash Gordon, quarterback New York Jets, becomes intergalactic savior all to the tune of Queen's classic soundtrack. All I have to say is "Flash...Aaaaa...Savior of the universe!" Does it really get any better than that?
"I'm not your enemy, Ming is! And you know it yourself. Ming is the enemy of every creature of Mongo! Let's all team up and fight him."
Let's get this straight right from the beginning: Flash Gordon is awesome. Rich in '80s campiness, it's a cheesy blockbuster extravaganza full of hammy acting, side-splitting special effects, glorious non-sequiturs, fantastic music and some of the m... read more
Description:When the totalitarian planet of Mongo decides on a whim to obliterate Earth, it's up to the lunk-headed quarterback Flash Gordon and his oddball companions to make the universe safe for democracy. Based on the classic (and infinitely more reputable) comic strip and its '30s screen serialization, this cotton-candy-colored trash classic deserves immortality for Queen's unforgettably pulsating soundtrack alone. The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright ... The Ups: Actually it looks just like the old serial from the 1930s but with color. Great idiotic dialogue. "So bad it's good scenes" like when Flash Gordon has a battle to death on a platform and deadly poisonus points shoots out of it. The sadistic sex-terror with gorgeous Ornella Muti - anybody who don't get a tinkeling feeling with her is not a "normal" dude. Colorful costumes. Great addictive and annoying soundtrack by Queen.
The Downs: All of the above if you don't treat it as a grea"

Let's get this straight right from the beginning: Flash Gordon is awesome. Rich in '80s campiness, it's a cheesy blockbuster extravaganza full of hammy acting, side-splitting special effects, glorious non-sequiturs, fantastic music and some of the most unintentionally hilarious dialogue ever written for a motion picture. Debates will rage for centuries as to whether the filmmakers set out to make a serious movie or an intentionally campy flick, but regardless of the conclusion, Flash Gordon is a bona fide classic, a lavish '80s fantasy swashbuckler that's effortlessly entertaining from start to end. "Ming The Merciless is mad & in a mood to mess with the Midgard.
Okay, while I have a few listed here, the truth is, I don't usually go for campy movies. To me, most of the time, I see films using camp as an excuse to not have to come up with a plot.
But, every once in a while, a movie will come along where, despite it's shortcomings in it's plot, the tongue in cheek aesthetics will strike the right camp chords in my heart.

You know those movies that aren't really "good," so to speak, but you love them anyways? I mean, yeah, you can deride Flash Gordon as campy, trashy, over the top, but it's supposed to be like that! This is what a comic book adaption should look like- colorful, opulent, magnificent, phantasmagorical, grand, and flashy as hell.
It's about a bleached blonde football player named, no duh, Flash Gordon who has to save the universe from the megalomaniacal Ming the Merciless, played by legendar"

"Princess Aura
Princess Aura was the daughter of Ming the Merciless, the most evil tyrant in the universe.
I guess it should come as no surprise that she is a sociopath, a killer, a double crosser, and vixen who manipulates men toward her own ends.
And yet I would pick Aura over the pure and innocent Dale Arden any day of the week. I think anyone with a pulse would be compelled to agree with me.
