Reviews of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

This was a ridiculous film, from someone who worships the original game like an unholy deity. Set in the future after Final Fantasy VII, Cloud and co have been hit by a mysterious disease called 'Geostigma' - the result of Jenova cells being released into the lifestream after Sephiroth's defeat in the original game. The reason I dislike this film so much is because of how poorly it handles the characters and issues that made the game so appealing.

The animation is great, fair enough, we already knew they can animate films, but the battle scenes are just one big joke. Everything moves at about 100MPH and you can not see intricate fighting moves or battles that are occurring between two characters. There are so many plot holes that the script could have been mistaken for the surface of the moon. The game builds up a great story that keeps you entertained for literally hundreds of hours, but this film just blows everything by reintroducing dead characters (he didn't die really!), giving the party members cameo roles only (except fan boy favourite, Vincent!), giving the party members super abilities (being able to jump practically into the atmosphere) and allowing the characters to just randomly appear in locations on the otherside of the world at a moments notice. Just what were they thinking?

Clearly it was made to fill the pockets of Square, who have since seen fit to rape the franchise even more with poorly conceived add-on games and anime series'. Watch it if you're a fan of the game but don't expect to be impressed by this morally bankrupt film.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children review

Posted : 4 months, 3 weeks ago on 31 March 2008 06:56 (A review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children)

FF:AC's popularity relies heavily on the success of Final Fantasy 7 as everyone with half a brain knew it would, i dont mean to be stating the obvious but it is the only way i could think of beginning this review. Whilst watching it i did enjoy the premise, the story was moderately interesting but i felt that when writing it they must have thought to themselves

"We dont need to write gold, we're writing a sequel to the greatest game on earth, everyone will buy it, then when they dont like it, it'll be to late as we'll have their money!!"

Maybe i am oversimplifying that but with all the effort that went into making it look good, the fight scenes, the graphics etc the adverts for this would look promising even if the story was about Clouds visit to the doctors.
That doesn't really mean its an awful film or anything, i like the fact you get to see something new from the FF7 universe, i like that the characters were superbly updated and wonderfully made. The fact Sephiroth also came back made me cringe a bit as i mean, what are the odds?! Really? But if a new bad guy had been created it would not have lived up to him at all.

Overall part of me is glad they finally made a sequel, im glad we had the technology available to make it look good, and the idea was alright. Most of me though wishes we never got such a B movie plot, the story was written for "straight to DVD" averageness when the game deserves an "EPIC BLOCKBUSTER" sequel. I enjoyed watching it as it is entertaining the first time, but its not something i will watch repeatedly, if i watch this half as many times as iv played FF7 it will only be because someone else has put it on, or im stuck on a desert island with a limited supply of entertainment.
Watch it to complete the story, but don't expect much from it, then you will be happy.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children review

This film is for the fans: "To those who loved this world once before and spent time with its friends, gather again and devote your time..." Besides this ominous opening, the story was not very hard to follow, and Ihave never played a Final Fantasy game. I think it pays to be familiar with Role Playing Games in general; knowledge of the genre kinda helps you grasp some of it better. I think though that if you pay attention, and accept what the film throws at you, it's quite easy to understand. There is a lot that isn't explicitly explained, and if you demand that it should be then you will probably be confused and irritated.

[Film] Final Fantasy VII: Advent Childre

Cool is the only word to describe it. The animation is simply amazing to look at. I have never played the game, so the story was a bit confusing for me. Not that it matters since one doesn't really watch this movie for its story, if there is any. For fans of the game though, the movie would definitely make more sense as there are inside jokes only the people who have played the game would get. For the rest of us, just sit back and enjoy the spectacular fight scenes and the breathtakingly beautiful animation and choreography.
