Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005)

This was a ridiculous film, from someone who worships the original game like an unholy deity. Set in the future after Final Fantasy VII, Cloud and co have been hit by a mysterious disease called 'Geostigma' - the result of Jenova cells being released into the lifestream after Sephiroth's defeat in the original game. The reason I dislike this film so much is because of how poorly it handles the characters and issues that made the game so appealing. The animation is great, fair enough, we already knew they can animate films, but the battle scenes are just one big joke. FF:AC's popularity relies heavily on the success of Final Fantasy 7 as everyone with half a brain knew it would, i dont mean to be stating the obvious but it is the only way i could think of beginning this review. Whilst watching it i did enjoy the premise, the story was moderately interesting but i felt that when writing it they must have thought to themselves "We dont need to write gold, we're writing a sequel to the greatest game on earth, everyone will buy it, then when they dont like it, it'll be to late as we'll have their money!!" Maybe i am oversimplifying that but with all the effort that went into making it look good, the fight scenes, the graphics etc the adverts for this would look promising even if the story was about Clouds visit to the doctors. This film is for the fans: "To those who loved this world once before and spent time with its friends, gather again and devote your time..." Besides this ominous opening, the story was not very hard to follow, and Ihave never played a Final Fantasy game. I think it pays to be familiar with Role Playing Games in general; knowledge of the genre kinda helps you grasp some of it better. I think though that if you pay attention, and accept what the film throws at you, it's quite easy to understand. There is a lot that isn't explicitly explained, and if you demand that it should be then you will probably be confused and irritated.

Cool is the only word to describe it. The animation is simply amazing to look at. I have never played the game, so the story was a bit confusing for me. Not that it matters since one doesn't really watch this movie for its story, if there is any. For fans of the game though, the movie would definitely make more sense as there are inside jokes only the people who have played the game would get. For the rest of us, just sit back and enjoy the spectacular fight scenes and the breathtakingly beautiful animation and choreography.
