In 1999, Thierry Guetta was a mild-mannered clothing store owner who had developed quite an obsession with filming everything in sight. He liked to do this in order to essentially validate his own existence. Transforming his life into film made him feel as if he existed, something he felt left out of as a child when he was not made aware of his mothers deadly illness until it took her life. That y... read more

I kept hearing some good things about this flick so I was really curious about it. Wow... I was rather blown away! There is a big discussion about the fact if it is a fake or not. I don't think it is a fake but I don't know for sure and, honestly, I really don't care. I think the whole thing did happen and The allmighty Banksy actually got pissed because Guetta got succesfull this way and decided ... read more

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post—hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner – with spectacular results. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un—filmable. And failed”... (more)(less)

"You know, it was at that point that I realized that maybe Thierry wasn't actually a film maker, and he was maybe just someone with mental problems who happened to have a camera." - Banksy
After watching Rubber I made it a 2010 double feature night by watching Exit Through The Gift Shop - it's a documentary that took an interesting look into the strange and bizarre world of street art - among the several questions "

"
Maybe the best documentary I've seen. It's about a man named Thierry who goes around documenting street artists. Eventually he gets hooked up with Banksy. Then, things get a little strange. Really makes you think about the nature of art."
"Graffiti artist Banksy's documentary about art, its "rules" and how one man can break all of them. This movie raises thoughts about art's flaws and how absurd making and especially selling it can be. In a way this is very tragic film. Still, Banksy has a great sense of humor which you can see in special edition DVD (Exclusive 2D-glasses!) and in the trailer.
I was angry when the movie ended.

""I used to find Banksy a bit annoying but I had a new respect for him after seeing this. It has that wonderful thing of a contributor slightly taking over the film and going in a strange and unexpected direction."
