B-movie with brains, style and attitude

"I don't give a fuck about your war... or your president."

With its restrained direction and deliberate pacing, 1981's Escape from New York may be a tough sell to contemporary viewers accustomed to fast-moving, exciting action flicks. However, it's hard to express just how badass and enthrallingly atmospheric this movie truly is, which is a credit to John Carpenter's abilities as a ... read more

There was a time when John Carpenter was rolling one classic after another and, with this in mind, I was really eager to check this flick. Honestly, I was expecting a lot from this flick as it looked really awesome and even apparently, Kurt Russell himself has stated that this is his favorite of all his films and Snake Plissken is his favorite of his characters. Eventually, I thought it was indeed... read more

"the names Snake" thats the line that made Kurt Russell famous (in my opinon) but, also inspired the role for which Kurt Russell played in Quentin Tarrantino's "Death Proof".The movie stars Kurt Russell as a Hero of of war who lost in an eye in battle. But, is later brought in for committing a crime or two. But, when air force one goes down in New york City. which is now a prison for "crazies' and... read more

Total Film's 30 Longest Sequel Gaps (30 movies items)

"Sequel: Escape From LA (1996) Escape From New York (1981) / Escape From LA (1996) How Many Years Between Sequels: A nice, even 15 years. Do They Acknowledge The Gap? They do - whereas the first film was set in the future 1997, the sequel takes place mostly in the 'future' 2013 (Gosh, time flies). In a Los Angeles savaged and separated from the US by an earthquake, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is again called upon to save the day, this time tracking down a doomsday device in LA."

The future kind of sucks. (307 movies items)

"Reason for the future sucking: Apparently, New York City, has become a really big Super Alcatraz, and the President has been kidnapped. Keep in mind, it was made in 1981, so not unlike the 50's they imagined robots in every house, cities on the moon, and people living in outer space, New York City was imagined to become Super Prison City. Year it takes place: 1997"

Honestly, I was expecting a lot from this flick as it looked really awesome and even apparently, Kurt Russell himself has stated that this is his favorite of all his films and Snake Plissken is his favorite of his characters. Eventually, I thought it was indeed pretty entertaining with a nice vibe and, indeed, Kurt Russell was really bad-ass. Furthermore, even though the budget ($7 million) was the largest that John Carpenter had received so far, it still had a B feature quality like most of his work and maybe that’s why I didn’t really love it. I mean, I thought it was pretty cool and fairly entertaining but, somehow, the story was not really amazi” read more

" It's the year 1997 (well, actually, it's 1981, the year that this movie was released....but the plot for this flick takes place in the future, in 1997.... which at the time of this writing, is actually the past...) and the city of New York has been converted into a giant prison, because in the not-so-distance future (which, at the time you're reading is the past...) crime has become an epidemic of national proportions. " Finally watching something from before my time this month. Something I have been planning to watch for several years and just never got around to it. John Carpenter is awesome. It has a few great cast choices including Kurt Russell, Donald Pleasance, Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Ernest Borgnine, and Isaac Hayes. It is a pretty cheesy and definitely shows it's age. It is still enjoyable and interesting to watch. The music score is definitely classic of John Carpenter's movies"
