Honestly, beforehand, I had actually never heard of this movie before but since I have weak spot for Wolfgang Petersen, I thought I should give it a try. It has been a while since Petersen had released anything and he might be retired (he is more than 70 years old after all) and even though his two last movies ('Poseidon' and 'Troy') were both rather disappointing, he did make some pretty cool fli... read more
My first clue should have been that it's a Dennis Quaid film. Thrown by the inclusion of Louis Gosset Jr., a film that should be avoided by everybody. There are no redeeming qualities to this film whatsoever.

During a bloody battle, two warring ships crash on a barren planet, with only one survivor from each ship. At first, the human pilot and the lizardlike Drac continue to fight, but the planet's harsh climate and the need to survive force them to ally. Over time, they put old hostilities aside and form a friendship. When the parthenogenetic Drac becomes pregnant, the two draw closer, overcoming their external differences to appreciate each other for who--not what--they are. The film is a thinly masked treatise on race relations, handled well by its two lead actors, Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr. This futuristic sci-fi adventure film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, features Gossett in an intricate full-body costume for his portrayal of the alien Drac.
"
Enemy Mine is a film that starts out as a "bad alien movie & then evolves into a "good alien" movie by intergalactically pondering the question of "Why can't we all just get along?"
The truth is, no matter what planet one is from, when it comes to racial differences, even on an interplanetary scale, we all need to follow Seinfeld's advice & just look to the black & white cookie.
Look to the cookie."

It has been a while since Petersen had released anything and he might be retired (he is more than 70 years old after all) and even though his two last movies ('Poseidon' and 'Troy') were both rather disappointing, he did make some pretty cool flicks earlier in his career. This movie was actually his first American production and it was actually pretty good. I mean, the plot was nothing really amazing but it was entertaining enough and I really liked the mood. It was also pretty neat to have only two characters so there were no sub-plots or other minor characters to draw the attention. As a result, even though the whole thing is rather pre” read more
"Author Barry Longyear reported at a convention that the studio insisted on adding a subplot involving a mine, thinking the audience would not realize that the "Mine" in the title was a possessive (as in "My Enemy") rather than an object.
Terry Gilliam was offered the chance to direct, but turned it down, preferring instead to develop his own project, which would eventually become Brazil.
According to Louis Gossett Jr., the Drac language was created from scratch; much of it is actually Russian"
"This movie stands out from many other 80's sci-fi movies, because of the time taken with character development. A story of two enemies forced to work together, this is definitely a recommended watch.
