"Next time you shoot somebody, don't go near 'em till you're... sure they're dead!"
The fruitful partnership of John "The Duke" Wayne and Howard Hawks (that spanned over a number of decades) produced several utterly fabulous additions to the Western genre. Red River marked their first collaboration, with the masterpiece of Rio Bravo soon following. El Dorado isn't as good as the fil... read more

January 2nd: Instant watch, tv screen
Overall opinion: Pretty nice
I don't see many westerns but what I do see of them I figure John Wayne pretty much plays the same character. I think I liked Robert Mitchum more in this one. I haven't seen much of him in movies but I like him. I wish I could say more but I hardly know the genre... it was an interesting story, got some funny lines, nice characters. Pretty much what you'd expect for the time period, including some mild racism for humor's sake."
"A rehash of Rio Bravo, using the same basic formulae, but it loses nothing in the translation. I love them both! The first film I saw James Caan in, too.

"Directors: Howard Hawks
Date watched: 20th October 2012 5pm-ish
Watched before?: I have no idea. Probably. I never remember which of these westerns I have watched before.
Thoughts: I quite enjoyed this one. Standard Western fare but the banter between John Wayne and Robert Mitchum made the fun in this on. Interesting to see James Caan in there with Ed Asner as well. "

Director Howard Hawks made this loose varation of the same theme a few years later. Again, Hawks directed, Wayne starred, and the script was written by the same writer. It still centered around the idea of working against an outlaw element by 'holing up' with their prisoner in the jail.
When Wayne was told about the project, he asked Hawks if he could be the drunk this time, but Hawks said no.
Instead, Robert Mitchum played the drunken sheriff.
Wayne played a hired gunman and old friend"
