“I cant believe this film has been given bad ratings. I take it those who have left these reviews are analysing scenes and editing techniques from a US perspective , rather than putting it into the social and economic context it was meant for!! This wonderful film stars the equally amazing Julie Walters who portrays a working class, British women dealing with patriarchy, working class ideals and values about women and about education, whilst being funny and entertaining!

It highlights everything about education, priviledge and sexism that still exists today (yes even in your wonderful United States where you dress it up as equal opportunities)!

“I'm a huge Michael Caine fan and since the ratings concerning this flick were pretty good here on Listal and on IMDB, I was definitely eager to check it out. Eventually, even though the whole thing was rather intriguing, I can't say I was really blown away. First of all, there were 2 small things that bothered me. First, the music was terribly annoying and distracting. You know, one of those awful 80's soundtrack with some awful keyboards... Secondly, I thought that Julie Walters looked way too old for the part. I mean, she's supposed to be 26 but looked 36, eventually she was 33 years old when making this movie. "Goodness knows why I haven't watched this before. I love the plays of Willy Russell - One For The Road and Blood Brothers being my favourites. And I'm a Michael Caine fan. Anyway, in short, I loved it. Walters' performance is absolutely wonderful, her comic timing is spot on, and her development of her character is utterly convincing, which is terribly hard to do, considering the transformations that occur to Rita.
