1974's Death Wish (which initially went by the apt working title of The Sidewalk Vigilante) was released at the pinnacle of Hollywood's obsession with anti-hero movies. This screen adaptation of Brian Garfield's 1972 novel is functionally simplistic, lowering itself to the cerebral level required for straight-up exploitation (though it con... read more
Charles Bronson is always regarded as a great actor, but I really don't see why. In this film, his wife is murdered after watching her daughter get raped by thugs who break into their home. Ol' Bronson returns home and after visiting his daughter in hospital and promptly fails to display one iota of emotion as he goes about his daily business.
Eventually he reignites his buried pass... read more
Death Wish succeeds more as anti-liberal backlash than as a movie, with an engaging premise of a conscientious objector who takes up arms in the streets of New York City when he finds that the criminals have run rampant without anyone to stop them. Based on the novel by Brian Garfield, the premise of the film pushes forward the notion that if there aren't enough police to help protect the citizen... read more
"As is usual for most movies that are followed by sequels, this first installment ofThe Death Wish franchise is the best. And more specifically, as far as I'm concerned, this is the only decent flick of the whole bunch.
To be honest (and if any of you Listophiles really knew me, you'd know that I have never been anything but truly honest with all of you, my fellow list-gathering bastards....) the only way I'd probably ever watch and/or revisit any of the other films from this series of "Broson B"

"Poisonous incitement to do-it-yourself law enforcement is the vulgar exploitation hook on which Death Wish is awkwardly hung.

t's a despicable movie, one that raises complex questions in order to offer bigoted, frivolous, oversimplified answers.

As I get older I find it harder & harder to give a crap about characters who get killed off or whatever before you're given any reason to feel anything for them. Instead I spent the time during the attack on Kersey's family thinking about how similar it was to the first HOME scene in A Clockwork Orange. And then I felt like Kersey's lack of emotion regarding the tragedy perfectly mirrored my own. Fortunately the rest of the film is mostly entert"

"We gotta let the cops handle this, Dad!"
"Yeah? Well, what if the cops can't handle this, Jack?"
After seeing that other movie, I decided to get started with February's selections. I did catch 5 minutes of the beginning of TV last year, but didn't watch the whole thing because I hate how TV cuts out certain parts. I just prefer watching movies untouched. This was a very good movie. Although the story isn't really anything new, I still thought it was done well. Charles Bronson's "

Katselu meni kyllä lähes totaalisen pipariksi omalta osaltani: katselin taas cinemaa sellaisessa koomatilassa, että piti tarkastaa puolet tästä uudelleen. Tällaista pitäisi viimeiseksi tapahtua 70s-trilleriklassikossa, jonka pääosassa on itse Charlie Bronson, vaikka pientä kaavamaisuutta leffan temmossa tuntui esiintyvän.
Ei mikään maailman provosoivin elokuva aiheesta, mutta tarpeellinen puheenvuoro kuitenkin. Näytetään, kuinka äärimmäisten väkivaltatekojen omakohtai"

Overall opinion: Okay
Expected a gritty revenge film, instead got a gritty violent film which didn't seem to have many morals, hopefully in a satirical way. But I am not so great at interpreting 70's films. It seemed pretty serious to me, that we were supposed to cheer on Charles Bronson's character as he murdered all these muggers. It just seemed very weird! He didn't even go after the specific muggers who attacked his family, he just killed any mu"
