Classic, gritty vigilante actioner!

"What if the cops can't handle this, Jack?"

1974's Death Wish (which initially went by the apt working title of The Sidewalk Vigilante) was released at the pinnacle of Hollywood's obsession with anti-hero movies. This screen adaptation of Brian Garfield's 1972 novel is functionally simplistic, lowering itself to the cerebral level required for straight-up exploitation (though it con... read more

Charles Bronson is always regarded as a great actor, but I really don't see why. In this film, his wife is murdered after watching her daughter get raped by thugs who break into their home. Ol' Bronson returns home and after visiting his daughter in hospital and promptly fails to display one iota of emotion as he goes about his daily business.

Eventually he reignites his buried pass... read more

Death Wish (1974)

Death Wish succeeds more as anti-liberal backlash than as a movie, with an engaging premise of a conscientious objector who takes up arms in the streets of New York City when he finds that the criminals have run rampant without anyone to stop them. Based on the novel by Brian Garfield, the premise of the film pushes forward the notion that if there aren't enough police to help protect the citizen... read more

New York movies:The 100 best films set in New York (100 movies items)

"A brutal NYC classic (one its star, Charles Bronson, had an uneasy time defending), this vigilante thriller crystallized the dangerous Beame-era Manhattan in the minds of millions. The pivotal scene goes down on a grungy subway car, where a furious Upper West Sider takes nickel-plated, .32-caliber vengeance on a pair of hapless muggers. Life would imitate art.—Joshua Rothkopf"

My movie year 2012 (703 movies items)

Aprakadabra's Movie Diary - 2012 (460 movies items)

Interesting film facts (393 movies items)

"The name "Paul Kersey" for the Charles Bronson character was the actual name of one of the extras hired for the movie. He allowed the use of his name in exchange for his appearing in all possible scenes requiring an extra. Dino De Laurentiis and Paramount originally wanted to call the film "The Sidewalk Vigilante" because they thought a movie with "Death" in the title was a deterrent and would put audiences off. When Ames Jainchill meets Paul Kersey in his office he says, "I don't know who sa"

Authors Hate the Movie Versions of Their Book (22 movies items)

" In an interview Brian Garfield said "It’s a long time since I’ve seen the movie, but I don’t remember it being terribly good, and I certainly don’t recall it possessing any of the depth of the original novel, which is a powerful, pacy meditation on loss, bereavement and revenge." He also stated that each of the following sequels are all pointless and rancid, since they all advocate vigilantism unlike his two novels which are the exact opposite. The result of this film, led him to wri"
