Nowadays, Eddie Murphy shows up only in very average, even very bad flicks. However, in the 80's, he was really a superstar and his movies were highly successful. For example, this movie was a huge success and it is one of his classics. So, with this in mind, I had rather high expectations before watching it. This is an African American CLASSIC. An exceptionally well made film. Everybody loves it but the critics. It could be that they have a hard time seeing anybody depict Africans as Royalty anywhere, the starving Ethiopian image is better suited to their taste, or better yet, the African American slave or criminal even. Get over it, this is a Great Romance/Dramedy

Back in the late eighteis this is the sort of film we expected from Eddie Murphy. A classy comedic romp through the streets of America. If he wasn't playing a sex crazed maniac or lovable police detective, he was playing a roguish prince hell bent on learning the customs of a strange new country whilst looking for a respectable wife.

"First viewing - March 25th/26th OK so it would seem that I'm not a big fan of Murphy & Landis's collaborations, which is disappointing since I've been a fan of both separately. I enjoyed this one more than Trading Places, but I found it to be overlong & uneven. "the opening of that bad film as some memorable scenes... the stunning body of Garcelle Beauvais (one of the girl in the royal bath) with another lovely lady is very hot, a spectacular show of some tribal dancers and a princess barking like a dog to please her prince (that's good stuffs). that's a classic Eddie Murphy's movie and even if the main story is really crazy it's fun to watch... that's a real guilty pleasure movie for me. "
