Silent Perfection

If you've never been exposed to a Chaplin film, or a silent black & white film in general, this would be the one to watch first. It will make you fall in love with that golden era of film making. Either this, or Chaplin's 'The Kid'.

All actors in this film I believe are better than most of the big shots today, because without clever scripts and speeches, these actors had to rely e... read more

One of my biggest movie-related regrets that I hadn't seen a single Charlie Chaplin film. The director and actor has received massive acclaim, and is still considered today to be one of the world's greatest directors. And yet, I had not seen any of his films. In fact, I had seen relatively few silent films at all. However, if Chaplin's other work is even nearly as good as City Lights, I will not h... read more

Chaplin hits this one out of the park!

City Lights could be the best Charlie Chaplin film to date; this poignant, entertaining film is both funny and heart-warming. This film also marks one of Chaplin's last silent movies. It was a bold move to release a silent film when the day and age of silent movies had dissolved, but Chaplin's trademark character just wouldn't be as appealing with a voice.

City Lights is another ta... read more

Charles Chaplin was deep into production of his silent City Lights when Hollywood was overwhelmed by the talkie revolution. After months of anguished contemplation, Chaplin decided to finish the film as it began--in silence, save for a musical score and an occasional sound effect. Once again cast as the Little Tramp, Chaplin makes the acquaintance of a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill), who through a series of coincidences has gotten the impression that the shabby tramp is a millionaire. A second storyline begins when the tramp rescues a genuine millionaire (Harry Myers) from committing suicide. When drunk, the millionaire expansively treats the tramp as a friend and equal; when sober, he doesn't even recognize him. The two plots come together when the tramp attempts to rais” read more

“One of my biggest movie-related regrets that I hadn't seen a single Charlie Chaplin film. The director and actor has received massive acclaim, and is still considered today to be one of the world's greatest directors. And yet, I had not seen any of his films. In fact, I had seen relatively few silent films at all. However, if Chaplin's other work is even nearly as good as City Lights, I will not hesitate to see his many other films.

Often considered one of Chaplin's best films, City Lights is the story of a young tramp (portrayed by Charlie Chaplin), who befriends a drunk millionaire. The tramp uses resources provided by the millionaire to give gifts to a young, blind girl, whom the tramp has fallen in love with. Things are a bit complicated, though, as when the millionaire is so” read more

Memorable Chaplin (4 movies items)

" The first appearance of the legendary tramp happened in Keystone Studios' film The Kid Auto Race at Venice (1914). Chaplin has said they told him at the studio to create a character of their wardrobe, and that's how the tramp was born. Like he says in his biography, when he had the outfit on, he immediately got lots of ideas; jokes, tricks, etc. Of course there already was similar characters in variety, and they've probably been a part of Chaplin's inspiration. ""Yes, I can see now." @ Blu-ray I'll have to admit that the only Charlie Chaplin film I had seen before I put on this one was The Gold Rush. Which I enjoyed a lot. City Lights ain't as funny as The Gold Rush, but what it lacks in humor it regains in heart, warmth and sweet and innocent naivety. Chaplin creates a film that's curiously funny all the way through. Either if it is Chaplin's own acting, or the peculiar characters he creates. It's not shout-out-loud hilarious, but there are scenes, "

" Possible gay subtext. The millionaire is a closeted gay person. After the tramp stopped him from committing suicide while he's drunk, they ate dinner and when he sobered up he said, "I'm out to everybody!, " and when he got drunk again he started kissing the Tramp. "
