Fernando Meirelles worked mostly with amateur actors from such camps. Leaving them to improvise to a large extent succeeded in creating this atmosphere of realism that underlies the entire film and creates a sense documentary. The way they edited the footage and connects the stories of heroes over 30 years is remarkable. More impressive, however, are scenes of battle that the originality and imagi... read more

Description: Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a housing project built in the 1960's that--in the early 80's--became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. The tale tells the stories of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the eyes of a singular narrator: Busca-Pé, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also to smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs. He grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But Busca-Pé soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. His redemption is that he's been given an artist's point o ... (more)

35 From 2: My Favorite Films From 2002 (35 movies items)

" For me, watching this Brazilian-based film feels almost exactly like watching a documentary. One frighteningly all-too real scene involves a young (incredibly young) kid gang member who is cornered by a much older gang leader from another troupe & then is asked to choose between getting shot in the hand or in the foot. IMO, it is a scene that holds more power, depth & context than most movies contain in their entirety. An incredibly eye-opening & moving picture that reveals the true grit of "

20 Classic Films Not Nominated For Best Picture (20 movies items)

"When "City of God" picked up four Oscar nominations at the 2004 Academy Awards — and four major ones too: Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing — it seemed like quite a coup for a foreign-language film. Especially considering Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund's film had been Brazil's official submission for the Foreign Language Oscar in 2002 and hadn't been nominated (that year's statue went to "Nowhere in Africa," and no, us neither.) Following its U.S. release, however, it rocke"
