Genuinely amusing, warm comedy-drama

I think it was just "Ok", it was a little disappointing considering the great talent of the Merchant+Gervais duo. Fiennes was great as always.

Film Diary - February 2013 (64 movies items)

" TV (RECORDED TO DVR) / New to me Date watched: 7th February, 2013 Project: None Why?: Haven't seen this one before Director: Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais Thoughts: I didn't like this to begin with but it eventually grew on me. The story starts off a bit dull (sorry) and any humour wasn't all that good either. The soundtrack was the best thing about it. The more I think about it the more I realise that may be on purpose. That's the point they were going for with this film. Cos 1970s "

The Cinephile's Film Journal: 2012 (330 movies items)

"Watched: 5/2/12 1st Viewing Thoughts: Ricky Gervais' directs this relatively generic, predictable coming-of-age comedy about a group friends trying to figure it all out. Having said that, 'Cemetery Junction' is just too fun not to like, and I'm happy to say that I had an absolute blast watching it. The only difference, for the positive, is the story, which flows at a blazing speed, making it all the more difficult to look away from. A guilty pleasure? Perhaps. Just don't go in expecting a groun"

Genuinely amusing, warm comedy-drama

“"What if the world's havin' a party and we're missing it 'cause we're stuck here?"

The "big dreams, small town, no chance" premise is a recognisable refrain in literature and motion pictures. Directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, 2010's Cemetery Junction is yet another feature to examine this particular quandary. If Gervais and Merchant sound familiar, it's because they are the dynamic duo responsible for the original British version of the TV show The Office as well as Extras. However, Cemetery Junction is not exactly classic Gervais and Merchant in a strict sense. While the film exhibits wit and provides a number of hearty laughs, at its core it's a serious drama about life, hope, family, friendship, taking chances and following dreams. Sure, the film never strays far” read more
