Description: Charles Bukowski (1920 - 1994) has been called the twentieth century Walt Whitman — a people's poet and novelist who was acquainted with hard times, terrible jobs, and living in poverty. He was born in Germany and raised in Los Angeles. Bukowski barely survived the regular physical beatings he received at the hands of his father, and he was always an outsider at school due to a disfiguring case of acne vulgaris. But he was saved by a love of writing and an interest in literature. He didn't have sex with a woman until he was 24. My Top Documentaries (39 movies items)

"Through the first 15 minutes or so I didn't much like this. "Great", I thought. "Here's another uncreative approach at trying to capture the essence of a dick-headish, albeit great, writer." Luckily, the film began to expose its soul and at the same time shed some revealing light on the wounded, but relentless soul of it's subject. By the end I was struck by the unadorned, yet extremely thorough scope of this documentary and the surprising intimacy it achieved."

"I met Bukowski years back, so that encounter made this doc at least moderately interesting."
