It took me a while to get into the movie. Who is exactly Busgy Siegel and who are all those people related to him and why does he go to Los Angeles? Of course, later on, I got all my answers and got rather hooked by the story. The directing is well done and gives a good feeling of the 40's. Bugsy is a mob flick that doesn't even try to compete with other mob flicks. And therefore, it succeeds as a gangster movie that stands out on its own.
