A Fascinating Debut

"Buddy Boy," Mark Hanlon's debut, is a haunting and potent film about dead end lives that provokes more questions than answers but remains bizarrely interesting throughout.

The film provides a look into the surrealistic existence of emotionally stunted, stuttering misfit Francis (Aidan Gillen,) who lives with his trollish invalid stepmother (actual amputee Susan Tyrell) in a squ... read more

Portraits of Social Minorities. (31 movies items)

" Another big-time social outcast movie, second only to "Bad Boy Bubby." Stuttering Francis lives with his invalid 'step-mom' Sal, and is on the cusp of a mental breakdown. He relieves the tension of his wretched and painfully awkward life by going to confession and jerking off to magazines. When he meets Gloria, his life begins to go in a bizarre direction as he quickly decompensates. QUOTE- 'AT TIMES I QUESTION MY FAITH... I-I-IN GOD. SOME TIMES I FEEL LIKE I HATE HIM... I DON'T, O-O-O-OF COU"

Psychological Cinema (95 movies items)

"Campy, weird, sick, but somehow awesome story about a stuttering Catholic man struggling with his crisis of faith and his despondent boozy 'step-mother,; who has secrets of her own. Irish actor Aidan Gillen is awesome here as the stammering youth; Francis (Gillen) is a truly unforgettable character. Be on the lookout for themes of guilt, religion, projection, and repression running throughout. "

They Be Nuts! (86 movies items)

"Francis When this good-natured but troubled stuttering Christian loner unexpectedly finds himself in the bed of a beautiful woman, he can't just let a good thing be... he promptly develops a delusion that she is, uh... e-e-e-eating people (I'm not making fun of stutterers, he actually uses this line somewhere in this strange story.) Catholic guilt... it will get you in trouble every time."

Characters I Like-- The Ultimate List (138 movies items)

"Francis Played by Aidan Gillen Obsessive-Compulsive, probably Schizophrenic Catholic with a stuttering problem and crushing guilt and self-loathing. I hate that I relate."

I Wouldn't Trade Lives With... (55 movies items)

"Francis Living with my shrill transvestite brother in a squalid apartment, having an incapacitating stutter and utter fear of the opposite sex, and eating Smeat (a close descendent of SPAM) for dinner every night would make me crazy too. It's a wonder socially awkward Catholic Francis didn't do something drastic long before this grim and surreal film begins. "
