D.W. Griffith is nowadays considered the first great movie director and even though I'm really curious to check his work, I also have some mixed feelings about the guy, even before I have watched anything he made yet. Indeed, his great masterpiece 'The Birth of Nation' is highly controversial but, still, considering myself a great movie buff, I couldn't avoid his work for much longer so I decided ... read more

A Movie A Year (Part 1) (102 movies items)

" Note : Eventually, I thought it was pretty good but there were many elements, inherent to the era that bothered me. I mean, the main character is an Asian man called 'The Yellow Man' and he was played by a white guy. I'm really sensitive to this kind of things and it was pretty offensive. Of course, I know, it was a common thing back in those days but, still, I couldn't help thinking that with an Asian actor, the whole thing would have been greatly improved. Still, it remains a solid drama, ve"

Best Films of the 1910's (10 movies items)

"Trust me when I say that the top 3 films here are all directed by the same guy: D.W. Griffith. This one is one of his very best, especially from that era and is still available today. Deep, emotionally charging, and just as relevant now as it was back then. The only thing this movie's got going over the top 2 is that it's so much shorter, so regardless of your views towards black and white or silent films, go check this one out. NOTE: Much of my comments here should transition directly to "

"The tragic life of the sensitive and frail teenage Cockney waif Lucy Burrows (Lillian Gish), and the scenes of her forced smile by pushing up the ends of her mouth with her fingers, and the unforgettable death scene as her brutal and bigoted father Battling Burrows (Donald Crisp) savagely broke down the door as she cowered in a closet and twisted to avoid him but later received the fatal blows."

"A frail waif, abused by her brutish boxer father in London's seedy Limehouse District, is befriended by a sensitive Chinese immigrant with tragic consequences. Lillian Gish's flair for such a heartbreaking approach to character alone makes this film completely worth the watch."
