Great romantic classic!

Brief Encounter was made at a dark time (towards the end of WWII in England) and I would've thought that it would have been a risky project back then but obviously not. The war didn't stop them from creating a fine film that is still classed as one of the best romantic films of all time. I suppose adultery teaches the audience of this film that just how easily you can fall in love with someone els... read more

"It's awfully easy to lie when you know that you're trusted implicitly. So very easy, and so very degrading."

If one mentions the name David Lean, the director's grand, big-budget spectacles will likely come to mind. Among them are such motion pictures as Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai and Doctor Zhivago. Yet, one of the most enduring of Lean's works is 1945's Brief En... read more

A classic

After hearing many great things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. Personally, I was more familiar with Lean's later work, composed of great epic adventures such as 'Doctor Zhivago', 'Lawrence of Arabia' or 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. Here, it is something quite different entirely, in fact, it is the complete opposite. Indeed, it is in black and white and it deals only with ... read more

Movie Reviews (101-150) (50 movies items)

" One of the most devastating unfulfilled romance movies that has ever been made filled with strong moral themes and symbolism. Without a single kiss it still have more emotion and love poured into it than any other romantic film made. It is a memory to a time when it was possible to meet a stranger, like him and still not f**k him/her totally bonkers in a moment of passion. Strangely enough this romantic movie still feels more timeless than any romantic movie I have ever seen made the last two d"

20 Classic Films Not Nominated For Best Picture (20 movies items)

"David Lean's unassailable masterpiece of stiff-upper-lip thwarted romance did pick up nods for Lean himself as director and lead actress Celia Johnson, as well as one for screenplay. And even in retrospect it feels like that year ("Brief Encounter" actually competed at the 1947 Oscars) the Best Picture statue would inevitably have gone to "The Best Years of Our Lives" — a film that dealt directly with the aftermath of the war that just ended. But despite an otherwise strong field too (no one w"
