To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, there was a time, in the 90’s, when there was some kind of wave of movies dealing with the black ghettos in the US and, from all these movies, this must be the most famous one they made. In fact, in this genre, I always preferred ‘Menace II Society’ which was even bleaker but t... read more

Description: John Singleton's portrayal of social problems in inner-city Los Angeles takes the form of a tale of three friends growing up together 'in the 'hood.' Half-brothers Doughboy and Ricky Baker are foils for each other's personality, presenting very different approaches to the tough lives they face. Ricky is the 'All-American' athlete, looking to win a football scholarship to USC and seeks salvation through sports, while 'Dough' succumbs to the violence, alcohol, and crime surrounding him in his environment, but maintains a strong sense of pride and code of honor. Between these two is their friend Tre, who is lucky to have a father, ... (more)

In fact, in this genre, I always preferred ‘Menace II Society’ which was even bleaker but there is no doubt that this movie was really good as well. Indeed, it was a realistic and heartbreaking take on the harsh reality of living in one of these neighborhoods, something that didn’t much change during the following 25 years. Back then, John Singleton became, at 24 years old, the youngest person ever to be nominated for the Best Director Academy Award and, even though many thought he ha” read more

"Katsottu: 6.3.2016 Netflixistä Oli kyllä loistava elokuva. Näyttely on asiallista, ja hieman surullista loppua kohden ohjaaja on saanut tiiviin tunnelman. "
