For better or worse, American cinema was everlastingly revolutionised the day that Arthur Penn's violent, stunningly-photographed landmark feature Bonnie and Clyde was released to an unsuspecting movie-going public. It would be judicious to state that critics were irrationally unfair towards the film, which was prominently criticised for its alleged "glorification of murderers" in addition to the brutality of the violence that earned a pretty severe rating for its time. There were further criticisms surrounding the production, such as the artistic license embraced by the film. I was ten-years-old when I saw Bonnie and Clyde for the first time. I did not understand all of the nuances within the film, but I loved how stylish and funny and tragic and complicated the characters were. They were beautiful young people, who robbed banks, and killed people, and loved each other fiercely. So fiercely that they ended up dying together, going out in a blaze of emotional longing looks and an orgy of bullets and blood (a piece of Clyde’s skull gets blown off. Seriously.). There is not a bad performance in the entire cast, nor is any moment wasted. The characters are richly developed, and were first for their time – they had sexual desires that couldn’t always be fulfilled, so they took it out in violent ways.
