I've always admired Mel Brooks' movies. The spoofs / parodies / references are very spot-on and, in some cases, very subtle and one requires sharp eyes or ears to spot that reference. They're also not sick or tasteless and one feels safe while watching his movies. Blazing Saddles is considered by many to be his greatest work and I couldn't agree more. Filled with amazingly funny scenes that requir... read more

He wore a shining star... and ever since the first time my brother and I saw this, we were hooked. It's got a little something to offend pretty much everyone, so it's an equal-opportunity offender.

Quotable, funny, and classic Mel Brooks. "How 'bout some more beans, Mr. Taggart?"

A classic

To be honest, even though I have seen almost all the movies directed by Mel Brooks (I think I’m missing only 3 of them by now), I'm afraid I have never been a really huge fan of his work. Anyway, since this movie is a huge classic, I was really eager to check it out. Following its reputation, I really expected the whole thing to be seriously hilarious but, to be honest, eventually, I thought it ... read more

The Ultimate Western Spoof. A town where everyone seems to be named Johnson is in the way of the railroad. In order to grab their land, Hedley Lemar (Harvey Korman), a politically connected nasty person, sends in his henchmen to make the town unliveable. After the Sheriff (Richard Farnsworth) is killed, the town demands a new sheriff from the Governor (Mel Brooks). Hedley convinces him to send the town the first black sheriff in the West. Bart (Cleavon Little) is a sophisticated urbanite who will have some difficulty winning over the townspeople.

My Top 10 Funniest Comedies (10 movies items)

"Arguably Mel Brooks' masterpiece. One of my favourite scenes is when the sheriff, Bart, first arrives in town and everyone turns on him, but he escapes by pulling his gun on himself and playing both the gunman and the victim. That scene really sums up the whole film's pitch-perfect satire of racism. But by far my favourite aspect of the movie is the villain, Hedley Lamarr, played brilliantly by Harvey Korman. This movie didn't leave much of an impression on me at first, but now I find it really "

""Blazing Saddles is funny, yet in another way it’s quite serious – especially if you place the movie in context with the blaxploitation genre... These were outside-of-the-system films that, among other things, depicted African-American men as independent, powerful figures capable of undermining white authority. Why was Blazing Saddles – a major studio release – allowed to do the same thing? Perhaps because it was disguised as a comedy and a period piece.." - Josh Larsen"

"Mel Brooks said that, in today's oversensitive Western world, Blazing Saddles could not be made. If that is true, then not only has the West become too oversensitive, but it has also become incredibly stupid. Way back when I saw it, it was obvious to me that it was satire. Blazing Saddles is only offensive to those who are not intelligent enough to figure that out."

"Re-watch - Aug. 29th Under different circumstances I would have watched another film from my queue, but the loss of Gene Wilder could not go unrecognized. I almost reached for Young Frankenstein instead since that's my favorite film he ever made, but it hasn't been long since I last watched it whereas it's been longer since I last watched Blazing Saddles. This is still one of the funniest films ever made & justifies its high placement on the AFI's comedy list. The ways it pokes fun at westerns"
