'A Big Hand for the Little Lady' is not one of the best films I've seen this year, but it is one of the most unusual and one which has left an impression on me.

A comedy western, the movie follows a family of three, of whom the father of the family, Meredith (Henry Fonda), get's involved in a game of poker against the wishes of his wife (Joanne Woodward), due to an apparent gamblin... read more

This is a most unusual film which on the face of it appears to be a Western but how can this be when there is no gunfight on the town's main street, no saloon fights or bar room brawls, no sheriff to keep order and put the bad guys in jail, no Indians - in fact not much action of any kind that would usually be associated with a Western film. So what is the appeal of this extraordinary film where m... read more

Into this rarefied atmosphere trudges an impoverished farmer who, despite the protests of his wife, plunks down his last dollars to join the game. Halfway through the proceedings, he falls ill. “'A Big Hand for the Little Lady' is not one of the best films I've seen this year, but it is one of the most unusual and one which has left an impression on me.

A comedy western, the movie follows a family of three, of whom the father of the family, Meredith (Henry Fonda), get's involved in a game of poker against the wishes of his wife (Joanne Woodward), due to an apparent gambling addiction. Meredith continually loses hand after hand, forcing him to bet on everything his family owns.

There's real inspired genius with this film, the majority of the movie is one long drawn out game of poker which faces many unusual complications. The movie's humor is very subtle, which I find ideal for Henry Fonda, as evident by both this and his performance in the movie 'Mister Robert” read more

The tension mounts as stranger in town Henry Fonda is tempted to get into the high stakes poker game with some wealthy cattlemen after he had promised his wife (Joanne Woodward) that he would give up gambling. Obviously, he does join the game and is convinced that he has been dealt a hand that can'” read more
