I wasn’t expecting much out of Bernie. I’d lost my taste for Jack Black right around the time I got into the upper levels of high school. But I wasn’t just pleasantly surprised, Bernie gave me a revelatory performance by Black, a deliciously twisted and dark comedic film filled with grotesque small-town denizens who wouldn’t seem out of place in a Southern Gothic short story from Faulkner ... read more

"In small-town Texas, the local mortician strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when he kills her, he goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she's alive. An unusual movie choice for Jack Black. The acting was good and I don't know whether I felt bad for Bernie or not. No one deserves to be killed, but no one deserves to be treated like crap either. If your looking for a laugh out loud comedy this is not that, this is a dark comedy. "

"Devilishly funny and unique in its construction. Jack Black creates a character that steadily becomes remarkably whole and human. Bernie is often very good, but never reaches greatness. Matthew McConaughey never settles properly into his character and this is one of the largest aspects holding the movie back. Still, an impressive and unusual offering from Richard Linklater. "
