Sequel to the sci-fi classic, 'Planet of the Apes', this movie picks up right where the original left off. This time they go totally camp with the predictably ridiculous results. There's some interesting parts, mostly continuing the themes of the original movies - exploring ape society, the results of nuclear war etc. The problem is that the main theme of the movie - the addition of the race of hu... read more
Okay, so the first half of this movie is a decent sequel to the first...but then, once in the Forbidden Zone with the more evolved humans, things go terribly wrong, which is also when they bring Charlton Heston back into the story. The movie quickly falls into garbage and badly written story line from this point on, ending pretty quickly afterward.

The second installment in the PLANET OF THE APES series finds another astronaut (Franciscus) following in Heston's time-wandering footsteps to a planet ruled by highly evolved apes where he encounters a group of nuclear holocaust survivors living in Grand Central Station and worshipping the very atomic warhead that destroyed their world. Followed by ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES. ... (more)(less)

The Ups: The shockingly depressing ending that manage to overshadow the original's and one sit almost thunderstruck back in the seat afterwards. It would never have been green-lighted in today's need for box office figures. It actually left a scar on my soul. The gorgeous Linda Harrison continue to run around in skimpy clothes. The expansion of the universe.
The Downs: It is impossible to get close to the original in scope and story. The effects are not that good. Charlton Heston disappearing"

“I was pleasantly surprised by the first installment. Indeed, it was actually better than I remembered. Unfortunately, this sequel was quite a step-down. First of all, surprisingly, when you would expect the opposite since the first movie was a success, the budget was even smaller this time and, as a result, they used some masks instead of the awesome make-up for many of those apes. Furthermore, the writing was pretty messed up. Indeed, for some reasons, you start with Charlton Eston and end with him as well but for no particular reason, and this time, the main character was played by another actor, some Heston look-a-like. Why? Furthermore, the beginning was just way too similar to the first movie but, at least, it was pretty neat to get back to this world and get more acquainted with this” read more

"As a kid, I was a huge fan of the Planet Of The Apes series.
I even attended a movie marathon at one of the local theaters that showed 5 of the movies, all in a roll. That was, by far, the longest amount of time I've ever spent in a movie theatre. What can I say? I was a kid who lived in a midwestern suburb. What else did I have to do with all the time I had?
But as I started to grow up into manhood, and as my tastes in cinema became more "distinguished", I could feel my love for the Ape flix b"

Rewatch
Catching this on an AMC marathon of the old series of films was a treat! James Franciscus plays another sole surviving astronaut who was part of a team sent out to discover the fate of Taylor's crew (from the first film) and finds himself in the same strange future world where apes are ascendant and manking has fallen.
Heston plays a smaller role here and the beautiful Linda Harrison returns as the talkative Nova. ;)
Still a solid 8 stars!!!"
"The return of the beautiful Nova, mutants and a post-ape-ocalytpic team-up with James Franciscus and Charlton Heston! I loved this one almost as much as the first but the series went downhill from here...at least for me.

"Charlton Heston, Beneath the Planet of the Apes
The only way Charlton Heston would agree to make Beneath the Planet of the Apes was for the producers to promise to destroy the world at the end of it, under the mistaken belief that would mean no further sequels.
So he obviously wanted nothing more to do with the Apes (until his cameo in the Tim Burton version), but I don't think he was ever on record as hating either of the two he made in the original series.
