Eliza Naumann is the young daughter in an intellectual family that is quietly dominated by the father Saul, a professor of Jewish mysticism. Saul's lifelong obsession to experience God through the power of language and meditative word play, as taught by 13th century Kabbalah scholar Abraham Abulafia, has affected the whole family. Eliza's mother Miriam is a biologist who, unknown to the family, is slowly going crazy from obsessive compulsive disorder which drives her to steal little objects she finds in other people's houses. She organizes them in a secret sculpture which she hopes will bring about tikkun olam, the mystical collecting of the scattered shards of creation, which is the job of humanity as Saul has taught from the writings of 16th century Rabbi Isaac Luria. Eliza's older brother Aaron has been so pushed by Saul to study music, that Aaron is ready to rebel and join the Hare Krishnas when he meets a nice girl from the local ashram. Eliza, previously ignored, becomes Saul's darling when she exhibits a mystical aptitude for spelling, winning competitions by visualizing the words and watching them spell themselves. Saul drops everything to drill Eliza in both words and Kabbalah, which causes the family to fall apart. Eliza pursues the National Spelling Bee with her father, but only to the point of privately encountering her own sheaf—a transcendental union with God that gives her seizures. She then fails the contest on purpose to return to her mother, who is now in a psychiatric hospital.
