Forgotten Stanley Kubrick gem...

"It would require a great philosopher and historian to explain the causes of the famous Seven Years' War in which Europe was engaged and in which Barry's regiment was now on its way to take part. Let it suffice to say, that England and Prussia were allies and at war against the French, the Swedes, the Russians and the Austrians."

''Gentlemen may talk of the age of chivalry, but remember the ploughmen, poachers and pickpockets whom they lead. It is with these sad instruments that your great warriors and kings have been doing their murderous work in the world.''

An Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's position in 18th Century aristocracy.

One of the most amazing Kubrick films with a lead character we grow to like. Amazing shots, and production values of this period piece.

Description: Stanley Kubrick's unique spectacle tells the picaresque tale of Redmond Barry, a rougish youth who starts his foray into the world as a likable Irish lad and ends up a rakish gambler. After a jealous Barry shoots his beloved cousin's fiancé in a duel, he is forced to flee Barryville. He embarks on a journey that leads him to the continent as a soldier--a job he finds less than pleasant. But he survives and, hardened by his stretch in the army, makes his way into the highest gambling circles of Europe, where his newly acquired ruthlessness stands him in good stead--until he soon finds himself on the edge of utter ruin. 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (2017) (425 movies items)

" Notes: Amongst all the tremendous masterpieces directed by the great Stanley Kubrick, I have noticed that it seems to be slightly overlooked which is just too bad. Indeed, it is actually a fascinating picture and I would go as far as saying that it is probably the best costume drama I have ever seen. First of all, it is really a gorgeous movie. Seriously, virtually every scene, every single shot was some kind of painting (check the screenshot above) and I had very rarely seen anything like thi"

500 Essential Cult Movies (502 movies items)

" This film did not at first achieve the commercial or critical success of Kubrik's previous efforts; a relatively obscure and slow-paced costume drama seemed an odd follow-up. But there is such an attention to beauty and the detail of beauty that it almost eclipses the narratives. Having won Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, and Adapted Score despite its failure at the box office, Barry Lyndon has found a sizable audience over time and proved to be an artistic masterpiece. A very good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Amongst all the tremendous masterpieces directed by the great Stanley Kubrick, I have noticed that this one seems to be slightly overlooked which is just too bad. Indeed, it is actually a fascinating picture and I would go as far as saying that it is probably the best costume drama I have ever seen. First of all, it is really a gorgeous movie. Seriously, virtually every scene, every single shot was some kind of painting and I had very rarely seen anything like this before. Furthermore, I thought that this tale was also quite spellbinding to behold. Indeed, I have to admit that I usually have a hard time to care for this genre because it usually deals with the so-called difficul” read more
