Azumi review

WOW! What an amazing film. After seeing this for the first time I had chills running down my spine. The plot follows a band of young assassins trained since birth by a samurai master, to rid the world of future war-mongers and clan leaders, in the hope that a unified and peaceful Japan will emerge as a result. After a playful introduction to the assassins they are put through a harrowing final test before setting off in search of their targets.

From then on, it is a superb action film with extremely well-choreographed swordplay scenes and fights. As the mission begins to take its toll on the young and worldly-unwise samurai, the group begins to deteriorate and the assassination targets begin to call upon increasingly heinous swordsmen for protection.

The final scene sees Azumi, played by the curiously attractive Aya Ueto, storming an enemy stronghold and administering wholesale destruction and death to scores of hapless human beings before the ultimate showdown with a villain that could only have come straight out of a comic book. Superb!
