Hilarious dark comedy!

"Insanity runs in my family... It practically gallops."

Arsenic and Old Lace is a film for individuals who enjoy the absurd dark comedy genre. This film is indeed a number of decades old and consequently ruthlessly disregarded. Notwithstanding its age you'll be hard-pressed to find a superior dark comedy that can match the genius of this: Frank Capra's 1944 film.

Arsenic And Old Lace is a film that is just absolutely amazing. This is one of the rare classics that are classic comedies. It is rather weird because it is a very serious story but it is a hilarious and pretty silly story at times as well. Arsenic And Old Lace is a rather rare story that is really funny and really tense. I thought it was hilarious when Mortimer Brewster couldn't convince his two ... read more

Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, to be honest, I have to admit that I always had a hard time with the screwball comedies and, even though this movie is probably one of the most famous in this genre, I still had a hard time to really care for it. I mean, it's not that the damned thing didn’t have some potential, in the contrary. Inde... read more

Mortimer Brewster is a newspaperman and author known for his diatribes against marriage. We watch him being married at city hall in the opening scene. Now all that is required is a quick trip home to tell Mortimer's two maiden aunts. While trying to break the news, he finds out his aunts' hobby; killing lonely old men and burying them in the cellar.

Movie Reviews (1701-1750) (50 movies items)

" This is one great black comedy about some murderous aunts that kills off people with arsenic. Cary Grant has seldom been funnier and the script is full of great dialogue and gags. Only the disappointment of not having Boris Karloff playing "himself" due to scheduling conflicts is the big sore thumb of the film. The rest is hilarious and completely bonkers. "

I mean, it's not that the damned thing didn’t have some potential, in the contrary. Indeed, it was dealing with a rather lugubrious concept and it could have been an awesome dark comedy. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the tone was just too whimsical for my taste. As a result, the whole insanity angle which was quite fascinating was in fact rather poorly developed. Furthermore, even though Cary Grant was a great choice to play the main character, he didn’t deliver one of his best per” read more

Moviewatcher122's 2016 Film Diary: March (43 movies items)

"March 28 "Look I probably should have told you this before but you see... well... insanity runs in my family... It practically gallops." Out of all the comedies from the earlier days of Hollywood, this one is one of the funniest ones that I have seen. It's a fantastic dark comedy that had me laughing from start to finish and it definitely deserves it's status as one of the greatest dark comedies of all time. Not much else to say about this other than see this movie if you haven't already."
