The film of the year!

"You can't build cover stories around a movie that doesn't exist. You need a script, you need a producer. "

Gone Baby Gone and The Town were enough to establish Ben Affleck as a superlative director, but Argo verifies that he's a filmmaking force to be reckoned with. What we have here is a godsend of a motion picture; a smart, riveting old-fashioned thriller which conveys a fascinat... read more

Since I heard about this movie, I became intrigued and when it won finally the Best Picture Academy Award, I thought it was finally time to watch the damned thing. And, to my surprise, I really loved it. I mean, I was expecting something good but not something so entertaining and quite flawless. Indeed, it was historically fascinating, it was a thrilling thriller and there were even some hilarious... read more

Let’s all just take a breath and a step back and actually look at Argo for a minute. Is it a bad movie? Not by a mile. In fact, it’s probably one of the better mainstream films to come out in 2012. But is it the awards-worthy juggernaut that it looks to become in the coming weeks? God, no! Nomination it for Best Picture all you want, but don’t give it the damn thing.

Best Picture Nominees - Worst to Best | 2013 (9 movies items)

" The Academy Award winning film Argo is a perfect example of a film that's almost perfectly crafted in every section. It's a terrific film. It's entertaining, clever and full of tension. The acting is superb, Ben Affleck is really showcasing himself as a masterful director and the story is skilfully told. Argo is simply a film that should be cherished. But it's still lacking something, and in my eyes, Affleck's first directing feature, Gone Baby Gone is still his best work. Argo is lacking th"

Argo Fuck Yourself And...

“...Other Bitchslapping Mansplanations

I could have lived and died with this movie if not for the hackneyed and tedious usage of embellishments. The eccentric producer, the bazaar incident, the tension and chase at the airport. They all added the much needed 'thrill' other than what the hostage crisis was already enveloped in. As if the said hostage crisis wasn't posing enough peril already in a country waging a vengeful (otherwise fair) war against those who wronged their socio-religious sensibilities. Spies or not.

It's an impressionistic depiction of an otherwise straight-up picture.” read more

“This film was not all it was cracked up to be. I felt it was quite a disappointment. I have no clue how in world this was nominated for best picture and even less how it won. The acting was decent, the story and the way events were played out less than interesting. Certainly one you could miss.” read more

“It was a good movie, but...Honestly I thought Zero Dark Thirty was better. What I liked about argo was Afflecks expertise and ease as a director and that his acting didn't bring the whole film down, although didn't have much range either. I also found the side story of his family life a wasted plot point. And I didn't like how two-dimentional his characters were and how flashy some of the scenes were. I think it would have been better if he simplified certain parts of the movie.” read more

A tense film

“Argo is one part Hollywood satire and four parts thriller, telling the story of an audacious plan to exfiltrate 6 US diplomats during the tense time of the US Embassy Hostage Crisis in Iran in 1981.

After a brief backgrounder into the political history of Iran, the movie goes on to show the takeover of the US Embassy and the ensuing chaos which these 6 employees use to make an impromptu escape. Granted safe haven by the Canadian ambassador, their relief is only temporary as they must leave Iran soon. But as time passes and tensions mount, the usual avenues for escape are no longer viable.

CIA exfiltration specialist, Tony Mendez comes up with a risky and totally out there plan - under the guise of location scouting for a Hollywood science fiction movie, he will get the” read more

Ben's Winning Beard!

“In the past I wasn't very fond of Ben Affleck as an actor. To my surprise, in Argo Jennifer Garner's spouse is a true revelation both as an actor, and a director, and even a producer! Maybe it was the beard he grew? :D

Jokes aside, this film about American hostages in revolutionary Iran has something of a classic. I had the feeling of a movie out of time, that could have been shot years ago, or in the future, and still be great narrative. There are a few minor issues, like too many lucky coincidences and near misses at the same time, but in the whole Argo works very well both as entertainment and as information and food for thought.

“If you like period piece drama, you will love Argo. If you like a realistic style spy thriller you will like this as well. For the my the thing that stood out the most aside from the great acting and hilarious one liners of legendary Alan Arkin was the ridiculous detail of the clothing and sets. OK.. All that said.. At first I was not sure why it was getting so much attention until I saw it.. its just really well done and top notch. What I did not like.. welll.. it won an Oscar for Best Film.. I am not saying it does not deserve an Oscar but I thought Oscars were for films the slap the hell out of the audience and or industry.. but i don't know much about Oscars.. so...” read more

A great movie

“Since I heard about this movie, I became intrigued and when it won finally the Best Picture Academy Award, I thought it was finally time to watch the damned thing. And, to my surprise, I really loved it. I mean, I was expecting something good but not something so entertaining and quite flawless. Indeed, it was historically fascinating, it was a thrilling thriller and there were even some hilarious bits. Even the animated introduction was great because it gave a context for the whole thing. Without it, the Iranians would have been some bloodthirsty hysterical fanatics but, with this intro, you understand that there was once upon a time a legit prime minister who took care off his people, nationalizing the petroleum industry. But, of course, the American government didn't like this and repla” read more

“So this is my first film that i have watched that Ben Affleck has directed. Though i do own the town i have not watched it yet. But now after watching this movie i will now have to find the time to watch that and also gone baby gone. So this film is about the 1979 true story of the rescue of six American's from Iran, while most the film has a really gritty serious tone as it should they do seem to place some dark humor in it... well as much as they could.

The whole cast sold it from the start Ben Affleck/Alan Arkin/John Goodman/Bryan Cranston all just killed it but for me Alan Arkin stole the show everytime the guy is on the screen he steals it. The last half hour of the movie was so intense it's crazy pulse pounding nail biting tension i have not had that felling while watching ” read more

But is it the awards-worthy juggernaut that it looks to become in the coming weeks? God, no! Nomination it for Best Picture all you want, but don’t give it the damn thing.

Argo is a perfectly fine movie, well made and efficiently acted, no one really stands out since most characters are just quick sketches and nothing more. It is very much of the tradition of heavily fabricated, loosely based on true events films that preceded it. It is pure middle-of-the-road, safe, warm, disposable entertainment that doesn’t reverberate or incite much worthy debate about its merits besides th” read more

Ben Affleck is on a roll!

“As opposed to his mediocre reputation as an actor, Ben Affleck has become a more successful film director following his debut feature Gone Baby Gone in 2007 and more recently The Town in 2010. Next on the agenda is Argo, another thriller set in the complex, political world. However, Affleck provides a sense of genius with Argo as it is not only a thriller about rescuing American captives from Iran, but also about the usefulness and charm of film. Sure, when you look at it that way, the plot is extraordinary but Argo has still got a hint of intelligence behind it. Therefore, Ben Affleck’s latest feature is not only about the complicating world of politics and the creativity of cinema, but also represents themes of bravery and commitment.

Considering his long filmography of medio” read more

"Argo is a generally satisfying film that takes on many different moods - from political thriller to Hollywood satire. Ben Affleck does a good job at directing such changes in tone, avoiding unruly spontaneity. The editing is also rather clever, juxtaposing moments of calm and chaos in rather interesting ways. Despite these positive traits, however, the film plays it safe and never reaches anything further than that of a decent high-budget work. Certain elements are merely glossed over, never giv"

“One of the strong contender of Oscar's this year. High Five, a wonderful two hours drama, "Argo" the movie directed by Ben Affleck, is so brilliantly crafted that it’s hard to believe it’s based on true events that occurred during Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

The movie set in Tehran, the year 1979, in post revolution in Iran. An emotional mob of angry, distressed Iranians, who were demanding handover of exiled Shah Iran in political asylum, for subsequent trial and possible death sentence for the atrocities committed in his era, overtaken the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979, over 50 American employees were taken as hostage. Six diplomats managed to escape and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador, risking the security of both countries and the lives of everyone in” read more
