The film of the year!

"You can't build cover stories around a movie that doesn't exist. You need a script, you need a producer. "

Gone Baby Gone and The Town were enough to establish Ben Affleck as a superlative director, but Argo verifies that he's a filmmaking force to be reckoned with. What we have here is a godsend of a motion picture; a smart, riveting old-fashioned thriller which conveys a fascinat... read more

Since I heard about this movie, I became intrigued and when it won finally the Best Picture Academy Award, I thought it was finally time to watch the damned thing. And, to my surprise, I really loved it. I mean, I was expecting something good but not something so entertaining and quite flawless. Indeed, it was historically fascinating, it was a thrilling thriller and there were even some hilarious... read more

Let’s all just take a breath and a step back and actually look at Argo for a minute. Is it a bad movie? Not by a mile. In fact, it’s probably one of the better mainstream films to come out in 2012. But is it the awards-worthy juggernaut that it looks to become in the coming weeks? God, no! Nomination it for Best Picture all you want, but don’t give it the damn thing.

29 Characters Who Were Whitewashed by Hollywood (29 movies items)

"Tony Mendez Tony Mendez is a character in the 2012 film Argo, but he's also a real person, and that person is Mexican-American. Mendez is the author of a book called The Master of Disguise, about his experiences aiding in the rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis. Argo was directed by Ben Affleck, who felt it would be a better idea to grow a beard and play the lead role himself, rather than casting an actual Latino person."

If There Had Been 10 (10 movies items)

" 2012 honestly included most of the big players. The only other two that I think could've made it in are Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom. While Skyfall did get five noms, and won two, I think that the Academy would've went with Anderson's film. It was the more awards-friendly of the two, and Skyfall always carried around the stigma of an action movie. And while they both made the cut at the PGA awards, Moonrise was also tipped by the WGA, BFCA (Critic's Choice), HFPA (Globes), Skyfall was not. Li"

If There Had Been 5 (8 movies items)

" Argo and Lincoln were the two obvious locks going into nomination morning, Silver Linings Playbook was a crowd-pleaser, and had the ever important Weinstein tag on it, and Life of Pi had hung on all throughout the season. Assuming that those four were locked in (they were), the only real question mark would be the fifth spot. Zero Dark Thirty was clearly the critic's favorite but, judging by Bigelow's director snub, it didn't have the support that many expected. Some would probably argue that "

Best Picture Nominees - Worst to Best | 2013 Oscar (9 movies items)

" The Academy Award winning film Argo is a perfect example of a film that's almost perfectly crafted in every section. It's a terrific film. It's entertaining, clever and full of tension. The acting is superb, Ben Affleck is really showcasing himself as a masterful director and the story is skilfully told. Argo is simply a film that should be cherished. But it's still lacking something, and in my eyes, Affleck's first directing feature, Gone Baby Gone is still his best work. Argo is lacking th"

Argo Fuck Yourself And...

“...Other Bitchslapping Mansplanations

I could have lived and died with this movie if not for the hackneyed and tedious usage of embellishments. The eccentric producer, the bazaar incident, the tension and chase at the airport. They all added the much needed 'thrill' other than what the hostage crisis was already enveloped in. As if the said hostage crisis wasn't posing enough peril already in a country waging a vengeful (otherwise fair) war against those who wronged their socio-religious sensibilities. Spies or not.

It's an impressionistic depiction of an otherwise straight-up picture.” read more

“This film was not all it was cracked up to be. I felt it was quite a disappointment. I have no clue how in world this was nominated for best picture and even less how it won. The acting was decent, the story and the way events were played out less than interesting. Certainly one you could miss.” read more

“It was a good movie, but...Honestly I thought Zero Dark Thirty was better. What I liked about argo was Afflecks expertise and ease as a director and that his acting didn't bring the whole film down, although didn't have much range either. I also found the side story of his family life a wasted plot point. And I didn't like how two-dimentional his characters were and how flashy some of the scenes were. I think it would have been better if he simplified certain parts of the movie.” read more

A tense film

“Argo is one part Hollywood satire and four parts thriller, telling the story of an audacious plan to exfiltrate 6 US diplomats during the tense time of the US Embassy Hostage Crisis in Iran in 1981.

After a brief backgrounder into the political history of Iran, the movie goes on to show the takeover of the US Embassy and the ensuing chaos which these 6 employees use to make an impromptu escape. Granted safe haven by the Canadian ambassador, their relief is only temporary as they must leave Iran soon. But as time passes and tensions mount, the usual avenues for escape are no longer viable.

CIA exfiltration specialist, Tony Mendez comes up with a risky and totally out there plan - under the guise of location scouting for a Hollywood science fiction movie, he will get the” read more

Ben's Winning Beard!

“In the past I wasn't very fond of Ben Affleck as an actor. To my surprise, in Argo Jennifer Garner's spouse is a true revelation both as an actor, and a director, and even a producer! Maybe it was the beard he grew? :D

Jokes aside, this film about American hostages in revolutionary Iran has something of a classic. I had the feeling of a movie out of time, that could have been shot years ago, or in the future, and still be great narrative. There are a few minor issues, like too many lucky coincidences and near misses at the same time, but in the whole Argo works very well both as entertainment and as information and food for thought.

“If you like period piece drama, you will love Argo. If you like a realistic style spy thriller you will like this as well. For the my the thing that stood out the most aside from the great acting and hilarious one liners of legendary Alan Arkin was the ridiculous detail of the clothing and sets. OK.. All that said.. At first I was not sure why it was getting so much attention until I saw it.. its just really well done and top notch. What I did not like.. welll.. it won an Oscar for Best Film.. I am not saying it does not deserve an Oscar but I thought Oscars were for films the slap the hell out of the audience and or industry.. but i don't know much about Oscars.. so...” read more
