Apocalypto (2006)

I must agree with Midnight's review, as well as Prelude76's. This film is excellent, despite all those violent scenes. I've stomached quite a few violent films, but this one particularly affected me more. I can handle violence but gross, no. (Apocalypto is *not* gross.) It IS unfortunate that the movie is subtitled, but then again, so was Mel Gibson's the Passion of the Christ. It would seem that Gibson is fascinated with using subtitles in his recent productions. I for one have no problem with that since I always prefer watching a film in its original language. However, as Midnight says, many people will miss a great action film if they don't want to read subtitles. I was a bit surprised with this film. Not in the sense that I thought it would be horrible and found out it was stunning instead. No. I was surprised because I thought it would be far more violent. I'd heard from several places/people that it was a very violent film. I didn't find it that violent. In saying that, if you aren't used to violence I wouldn't recommend watching it while eating, it's just for someone who is used to watching violent films I was expecting to cringe. Not that any of that is a bad thing. The movie was actually stunning. I'm so glad I watched it seeing as I wasn't going to (it's an anti Mel Gibson thing). I believe this was the best action film of 2006, and it deserved a lot more attention than it got. It has more bloody deaths than the overrated Oscar-winner, 'The Departed'. It has more frantic fast-paced action then that horrendous crapfest that was 'Crank'. The cinematography was on par with the Oscar-winner 'Pan's Labyrinth. The costume design should've won an Oscar rather than 'Marie-Antoinette'. But what really made me fall for this film is the storyline; about one man doing everything he possibly can to save his young son and pregnant wife. A pure action film that also manages to tug at your emotions is something quite rare. I suspect that the hostility between the jewish Hollywood elite and Mel Gibson is why powers-that-be have somewhat successfully restrained its success. ...Read more

When I watched this movie it reminded me a lot of Braveheart. The locations and shooting in this film are wonderful. I love the way Mel shoots his action scenes. The story in the movie is a pretty simple one that everyone can relate to, protect your family. As you watch the movie, you really want the main character to kick butt, win, and protect his family. I love watching this kind of movie when it is done well. Mel has made this movie really well and it was a lot of fun to watch. I will say that I know how to read and it doesn't bother me to see a movie in a foreign language and read subtitles. If this turns you off, I wouldn't recommend watching this movie.
