From time to time, you get a director above all known for one genre who would direct something completely different (the best example would be Wes Craven, famous for his horror movies who did make 'Music of the Heart' which couldn't have been more different than his usual work). Film Journal 2015 (112 movies items)

" This had a really interesting take on the Shakespeare mystery. Maybe the real playwright is a noble who would loose his position if he published, so he gets this silly actor (the real man named Shakespeare) to pretend it's his own work. It was thought-provoking, but less suspenseful than I'd hoped."

Now, it was Roland Emmerich's turn to direct something else than his usual action flicks. Indeed, this time, he went for a very elaborate costume drama which he financed on his own. Eventually, while his action flicks were usually pretty dumb, I thought this one was actually rather complicated, probably too much. Indeed, if you don't have a good knowledge of the time periode, it will be rather difficult to keep track of who is who and what was their relationship with the rest. On top of that, I thought that Emm” read more

2011 Films - Best to Worst (123 movies items)

"6/10 That William Shakespeare actually was a fraud is an interesting theory and a fine premise for a film. It is also a bit interesting to see Roland Emmerich moving out of his comfort zone, in order to make a historical costume drama. Thankfully, he decided to bring with him his talent for creating wonderful visuals. Because if anything, Anonymous is a beautiful film to look at. The structure of the film is a bit messy, however. It jumps back and forth in time, which are a bit confusing in the"

" Aug 23, instant watch This is one of those movies that I love so much, but that I know as soon as I watch it that not many others will love. It's one of those that reached me on a personal level, and I became emotionally attached to the characters and story. Something about this artist suffering for his work, forbidden love (surprisingly lacking in cliches), and a battle for the importance of theater and writing really spoke to me. Not to mention the entire movie is gorgeous, the characte"

My Movie Diary 2012 (116 movies items)

"5.12 What if William Shakespeare didn't write all those stuff? "Anonymous" explores this and much, much more. Think an edgy, darker "Shakespeare in Love" if you will, if you must, whilst unnecessary--and it has a bold ending. Great acting ensemble and solid production. One of the most sought after role in all of England is that of Queen Elizabeth."

Audacious, yet let down by an array of problems

“"Though our story is at an end, our poet's is not; for his monument is everliving. Not of stone but of verse. And it shall be remembered. As long as words are made of breath. And breath of life."

Roland Emmerich has based his career around pure spectacle - his résumé includes the likes of Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, all of which provide fun but dramatically weak visions of large-scale mayhem. 2011's Anonymous is a radical departure from the director's comfort zone, as it represents Emmerich's first attempt at a drama-focused human story. Scripted by John Orloff, the film is a bold rendering of a controversial conspiracy theory which asserts that Shakespeare was a fraud. Rather than a Dan Brown-esque mystery involving present-day characters follo” read more
