I love Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, and the pairing of the two in this film is just a wonderful thing to watch. This movie has some of the most amazing scenes, I love the choreography, the music. Who cares if the story is a bit flimsy - everything else is so beautiful to watch, there's a reason this movie is a classic, an Oscar winner, and on more than one top 100 list made by the American Film ... read more

Eventually, I really had a good time and I thought it was quite entertaining. Gene Kelly is definitely an amazing dancer (I always thought he was much more interesting than Fred Astaire) and there were indeed some i... read more

While Singin’ in the Rain is easier to embrace and admire, An American in Paris is the more coolly intellectual. It’s the pop-sophisticate in comparison to its more extroverted sibling. The two films probably shouldn’t be compared too much as their aims are different, but they keep getting compared due to Gene Kelly’s starring in both, and that this one swept the Oscars while Singin’ was... read more

Description: Gene Kelly, producer Arthur Freed, director Vincente Minnelli and an ace creative team conjure sheer screen magic, one of the American Film Institute's Top-100 American Films. Kelly plays an ex-GI who loves Paris and loves even more an alluring (but engaged) perfume-shop clerk (Leslie Caron in her beguiling screen debut). Dance sequences spun around Gershwin songs accent Kelly's romantic pursuit. And the final 17minute-ballet - combining the title symphony, Impressionist set stylings and Kelly's unique talent for telling a story in dance - lifts this winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture into the ether of timelessn ... “While Singin’ in the Rain is easier to embrace and admire, An American in Paris is the more coolly intellectual. It’s the pop-sophisticate in comparison to its more extroverted sibling. The two films probably shouldn’t be compared too much as their aims are different, but they keep getting compared due to Gene Kelly’s starring in both, and that this one swept the Oscars while Singin’ was ignored.   It’s not fair, as An American in Paris offers plenty of its own exuberant and giddy thrills. There’s the strong songbook by George Gershwin, director Vincente Minnelli’s incomparable work, and Kelly’s wonderful choreography throughout culminating in a seventeen-minute ballet sequence that is among the most beautiful things to come out MGM’s Arthur Freed unit.
