Bobby Platt (Bale) is a sweet natured, mentally challenged 24 year-old who has spent his entire life at the mercy of an abusive step-father (Benzali) he calls ‘The Fat’. His only comfort in life is his pet mouse Peter and the protective love of his mother.
However when Bobby’s mother tragically dies, he is left as heir to the family business, a business his cruel step-father is determined to control. Terrified of ‘The Fat’ threats to have him committed Bobby flees the only home he has ever known, and enters a world he knows nothing of.
Travelling the English country side alone and frightened Bobby meets the gruff recluse Mr. Summers (Hurt), whose life’s work is to bury the animals he finds by the side of the road. Intrigued with Bobby’s simple nature and love of animals Mr. Summers begins to teach Bobby the intricacies of his ‘work’.
But when Bobby eventually decides to return to London and confront ‘The Fat’, he quickly discovers that the treacherous nature of greed and money runs far deeper than he ever imagined.

Heartwarming and Sad
Christian Bale does such a good job of portraying an innocent youth learning about all the little animals. John Hurt also does a fine job as being a father figure for Bobby during this emotional time. Seeing a dead rabbit in his arms makes you want to cry. Kindness, trust, love, death, and the sorrow of deceit, this movie will leave you in tears.
