This is inter-racial romance in the most taboo way: He's black, she's white; he's a young stud, grandma is 20 years older; he's Moroccan, and she's German! This is instant formula for a doomed relationship, but not so. As much as the two needed each other, used each other, they needed the very disgusted people around them to verify their love. In their best moments, they show the very human weakne... read more

A good movie

Unfortunately, I haven't seen many movies directed by Fassbinder so I cannot really judge his work. This flick is the one which made the best impression on me. The directing and acting are very sober and realistic and it makes the whole thing rather fascinating to watch. Definitely worth a look.

"10.1. DVD The very first Fassbinder film I've seen. And a very good one too. At first, the film seemed a bit one sided look on racism, but it gets better near the end, as we see that Emmi and Ali have their weaknesses too and are far from perfect people. The ending is somehow depressingly beautiful. The cinematography is also really nice in its simplicity."

"ToniJJJ suggested Fassbinder's every film, but since I haven't seen any of them, this is here to represent them all. EDIT. 31.1.2014 So, I've seen Ali now and after some consideration, I wouldn't call it a "night film". But I'll keep it here anyway, to represent other Fassbinder films."

"28.11. DVD, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Rainer Werner Fassbinder Emmi, a 60-something cleaner woman stumbles into a bar to shelter from the rain and falls in love with an Arab man. Eventually they get married which is not to everyone's liking. The film paints a very real, xenophobic picture of post-Munich-tragedy Germany. Everybody around Emmi seems to despise and forsake her. Out of jealousy, out of fear, out of hate - the reasons are not stated, which I liked. It's the turn the film takes after"

Film Journal 2012 (58 movies items)

" April 30th - Much like Douglas Sirk's film All That Heaven Allows was a melodrama about age and class Rainer Werner Fassbinder film Ali: Fear Eats the Soul takes that similar premise but adds race to the equation. Fassbinder really does widen the gap between the two lovers by making a more extreme age difference in addition to making them the subject of ignorance and prejudice. The film does a wonderful job of showing the isolation and loneliness that comes from being marginalized by a socie"
