When speaking of the great old time directors Billy Wilder is often one of the first names thrown out there. After all, he created some of the most famous and most widely renowned films of Hollywood's bygone era - from Some Like it Hot, to Double Indemnity and, even, to something like The Apartment. Rarely mentioned among those classics is the 1951 drama Ace in the Hole.

This is one of my favourite Billy Wilder movies. Kirk Douglas was superb as cynical newspaper reporter Chuck Tatum and Jan Sterling was just magnificent as unfaithful wife Lorraine Minosa. The impressive supporting cast includes Ray Teal, Porter Hall, Bob Arthur and Richard Benedict. "Another one of those flicks that was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of its time and is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago. Also, a good example of just how good Kirk Douglas and his chin could be. Would make a great double bill with A Face in the Crowd. "

"Billy Wilder's satiric depiction of the power of media is to date one of the coldest pictures of it's subject still evading all of the foxholes in which many other contemporary films fell. Wilder's talent to cynical storytelling masked in the disguise of dark and dry comedy makes him one of the greatest of the period. Considering the down-beat ending, which isn't all that usual in 50s Hollywood it really isn't hard to see why this film did not do so well at it's time. "

"First viewing - June 28th/29th Review by madstalk Pretty much agree with the above review. Kirk Douglas is Amazing and almost everything is Great. The ending seems a little off & is the only weak point IMO. Absolutely worth a look, and I have to thank Kris for putting it on my radar. So glad I watched it before it left instant."

Though the slight misogynistic undertones are a bit unsettling, this film brilliantly satirizes the manipulative relationship shared between the media and its public. Kirk Douglas's acting is absolutely perfect, effectively contributing to the overall intensity of the film. After only one viewing, I immediately have this tied with Double Indemnity as my favorite non-comedy by Wilder. "
