A man falls in love with the girl of his dreams but his ex-lover doesn't let go so easily and he ends up with a grotesquely disfigured face in the process. The rest of the movie is his quest to overcome his disfigurement. Sounds like a conventional against-all-odds kind of story, doesn't it? Well, it isn't. There are bizarre occurrences, paranoia, violence and murder. The movie examines the nature... read more

With this movie, Alejandro Amenabar became a household name and went to direct ‘The Others’ in Hollywood. After ‘Mar Adentro’, it became rather quiet with the Spanish director but, apparently, he is coming back with something new in 2015 after a 6 years hiatus. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I find it rather difficult to choose between this one and the remake which one is the bes... read more

The original version of Vanilla Sky, so to speak. (Vanilla Sky is a remake of this movie.)
The story is slightly different though... but the voice at the beginning ("abre los ojos") is the same... :-)

Monthly Movie Journal: September 2011 (45 movies items)

" The first third of the movie feels like a dreadful soap opera in many ways. From there it improves, though I felt too much of the characterization and relationships were painted in broad strokes. The twists and turns of the plot and mind-fuck aspect of the film were executed very well, but ultimately I wasn't ever truly engaged at an emotional level. By the end I felt there was sufficient fun to be had in a purely cinematic sense, but... so what? "

"Original Title: 'Abre los ojos' Directed by: Alejandro Amenábar With: Penélope Cruz Plot: A very handsome man finds the love of his life, but he suffers an accident and needs to have his face rebuilt by surgery after it is severely disfigured. Note: It is difficult to choose between this one and the remake which one is the best. I think it still prefer the original version because it focuses more on the story and there is no Hollywood influence here. "

Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I find it rather difficult to choose between this one and the remake which one is the best. Still, I think I still prefer the original version because it focuses more on the story, there was no Hollywood influence here and, of course, the whole thing came from this flick. Still, even though it was an intriguing story, somehow, it didn’t really blow me away. I don’t know, on one hand, the surrealist atmosphere was one of the main assets of this movie, making it sometimes quite mesm” read more
