The Marx Brothers take on high society. Two lovers who are both in opera are prevented from being together by the man's lack of acceptance as an operatic tenor. Pulling several typical Marx Brothers' stunts, they arrange for the normal tenor to be absent so that the young lover can get his chance.

The Marx Bros. - Best to worst (13 movies items)

" Perhaps a far better movie overall as far as the Marx Brothers' films go up to this point, as for once the plot is held to tightly & every scene serves a purpose. A Night at the Opera boasts some of the brothers' most memorable bits, including one of the Greatest scenes ever, the stateroom scene. And so in these respects it's definitely worthy of its distinction as a great classic movie. Yet the anarchy of their earlier films seems to have gone out with Zeppo, which is a little sad. Instead it'"

Filmsite's Greatest Funniest Movie Moments/Scenes (224 movies items)

"Regarded by some as the funniest sequence ever filmed -- the famous "stateroom" scene (preceded by the 'food-ordering' scene) in which a small cruise ship room is crowded with all four Marx Brothers, chambermaids, an engineer, a manicurist, the engineer's assistant, a passenger looking for her Aunt Minnie, and staff stewards - and opera matron Mrs. Claypool's (Margaret Dumont) opening of the door that spills all the occupants out onto the floor; also the classic 'contract-tearing' scene between "

Filmsite's 100 Greatest Film Scenes (102 movies items)

"This Marx Brothers' musical comedy has one of the most celebrated scenes in all screen comedy - the classic, slapstick crowded stateroom scene. Seedy entrepreneur and swindler Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) sails to New York on the S. S. Americus with the New York Opera Company to represent his interests toward wealthy dowager Mrs. Claypool (Margaret Dumont). On board, Driftwood finds himself in Suite # 58, a telephone-booth-size stateroom on the cruise ship. When the steward attempts to cram"
