(A review of A Hard Day's Night)The Beatles contained an easy going charm, and a certain British wit which was unique to themselves while still being obviously British, and so putting them into a film made only the most perfect of sense. Knowing that A Hard Day’s Night was made on a shoestring budget, barely contains any plot and was filmed in a weekend (I’m exaggerating, but not by too much) only makes you appreciate the sheer ingenuity and greatness of it all the more. This should have been a complete and utter disaster.
The plot follows a day in the life of Britain’s newest BIG thing, and nothing since has proved to be bigger, better or more long lasting really. Throw in a few musical numbers – culled from the soundtrack and a few odds and ends singles – and some verbal zingers and you’ll get the gist of the film. Having said that, it’s hilarious, and breezes by with the sweetest of tastes. I like that Ringo gets a lot of attention, he always gets lost in the shadow of the other three despite being just as important. He’s a natural actor and gets the best lines, he also pulls the best faces. The dances he does at a party they sneak off to had me giggling. So did the crying, hysterical to the point of derangement faces of the teenage girls screaming their heads off at the very end. Yes, that’s a real concert at the end. My favorite girl is the blonde who looks somewhere between orgasmic ecstacy and mental bereavement while mouthing “George” and hysterically crying.
But let’s discuss the visuals for a moment. The intro has since been copied and pasted as the intro for the first Austin Powers movie. The “Can’t Buy Me Love” sequence has been scene by everyone, and was used as the basis for the Monkees’ TV show opening sequence. This is the music video in its zygote form. Leave it to the Beatles to practically invent everything about modern music in some way, shape or form.
