Tonite, We Dine In Hell!

Posted : 6 months, 3 weeks ago at Apr 16 0:58
I thought that the limited comicbook series was just okay.
But then Zack Snyder & the writers took Frank Miller's story & used this movie to add a whole different dimension to the telling of this early historic battle. While the story itself suffered a bit because it had to be shorten into a "two-hour" movie ( or however long this thing ran), it seemed to be made up by the surrealist matrix-like effects that were used to enhance the story-telling in a manner such as when an artist uses a new medium for his/her artwork.
In this history epic, I have seen the future of film storytelling.
And it works.

Frank Millar's Vision come to life...

'' Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!'' King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C.. Gerard Butler: King Leonidas Violent, action-packed, maybe repetitive but visually stunning and imaginative like frank Millar's Novel. loosely based on real events. Truly immense and the scale is gigantic, so much violence it oozes with it. Did get annoyed with David Wenham's narration a tad, loved the pure macho-ism in this. Gerard Butler as King Leonidas was absolutely one with the part he plays. He's such a remarkable versatile actor who plays such a strong lead. Lena Headley as Queen Gorgo also such a strong leading woman among such a male dominated cast yet shes formidable and a good enough actress to remain stand out. Michael Fassbender and Tom wisdo...Read more

Funniest movie of 2007.

Really strikingly beautiful cinematography and action choreography.

But the plot, the acting, the writing-- it's a glorious monument to the power of cheese. I laughed all the way through. It's just sooo outlandish and over-the-top and yet it takes itself sooo seriously that I couldn't help but giggle.

Definitely worth seeing. 8/10.

Poonany's Thoughts

Sexual Content Extended love scene between Leonidas and the queen viewers can see her nude breasts. The adolescent Oracle writhes and sways while wearing a sheer cloth that reveals her breasts. A character unwillingly has sex to procure a politician's favor. Although no nudity is shown in that scene, the aggessor whispers menacingly: "This will not be fast. You will not enjoy this." Xerxes' lair is depicted like an orgy, with various half-dressed Persian women kissing, moaning, and having sex. Violence Over-the-top battle-scene violence, including graphic decapitations, severed limbs, mutilated bodies piled high, arrow-filled torsos, etc. Young Spartan boys are forced to furiously fight each other. The Spartan mottos are "No retreat, no surrender" and "No prisoners, no mercy." ...Read more

I'm fighting in the shade mate!

I'm a massive fan of the Battle of Thermopylae. There is no greater instance in history where spear and shield meet. Outnumbered and outgunned but never outdone.

There is partial story to the film but it is the visuals and the action that makes me really appreciate this comic-style work.

This movie is masculine enough to fit into the genre of films like Predator, the entire group is just a manly muscle fest which is what recent cinema has been lacking.

Their efforts maybe fruitless but the leadership and valour can't be ignored. After seeing this film, I'd join the Spartans. There is not a real man alive who wouldn't!

Frank Miller = amazing Comic writer.
300 = amazing comic.
300 the Movie = amazing.

The story is a bit thin, not to the extent that people are saying, I believe... but the incredible cinematography, effects, and action more than make up for that. Frank miller is quickly turning Comic-based movies into a new art form.

The story could never compare to Braveheart or Gladiator, but the cinematography is spectacular.

Amazing movie !

Saw the midnight showing, gotta say that it's the best action/epic since Braveheart. Gladiator was more of a character story, but I really liked this even more than Gladiator as a movie. The action scenes were epic and absolutely gorgeous, with loooooooong single-take cuts that really amp up the action in slow-motion. The cinematography was amazing. Battle scenes the like of which I have not seen on the screen since "Private Ryan".Butler commands the screen in a way I have seldom seen, he deserves at least some consideration for an Oscar. And folks, this was the "warrior ethos" on display. Its what we in the USMC try to instill in our Marines. I've never seen it put better than the words these players speak, and the actions they perform. It tells you "why" we, who volunteer to fight, are w...Read more

It was pretty amazing!

This movie was exactly what I hoped: 10% story, 90% epic battles, so if you enjoy complex plots then go see something else. I don't really think that it could get any better than this. This had enough fighting and gore to rival Starship Troopers. It was a solid 10, and I would recommend this movie to anyone.....over the age of 16 or so (Nudity and Gore).

who didn't think this movie was excellent. I was disappointed, it was definately no Sin City, the action was no Troy, and the visuals although good left a lot to be desired. As far as artistic violence, you did not see a whole lot of it (I didn't think it was that gory and it was stylised anyway). I must prefer the stunning choreography and visuals of House of Flying Daggers or Hero. The dialogue was minimal and there was little character development. Also historically it was slightly exaggerated and the Persians are made out to be superhuman. As a history nut that bothered me a lot! Nonetheless my husband enjoyed it and so did our friend. If you can happily sit there and watch action with little else then you may enjoy it.

Pathos

1st of all: I quite enjoyed watching and I dont regret watching.
But: Dont watch this, if you like movies to have a plot, because this is just one wild orgy of violence. And it has so many "for your country", "for freedom" heroism references while batteling "the Persians" that at least with me leave the aftertaste that this could also be us propaganda.

This was a stunning visual movie. The blending of special effects CGI with live action was seamless. The muted color scheme really added to the feel of the movie. The 300 Spartans chosen to go against the thousands of invading soldiers look intimidating. They looked ready to kick some serious butt and did in the movie. The battle tactics were amazing and very realistic. Someone obviously did their homework before making the movie. Gerard Butler was the perfect leader of the Spartans. He makes you want to join in and help fight. The battle scenes are very intense and bloody. I saw some little children in the theater when I went and didn't really like it. This is not a family film and younger kids should stay at home. There are a couple of sex scenes that don't leave much to ...Read more
